Karween, Victoria
Karween is a locality situated on the Redcliffs-Merringur Road in the Sunraysia region, south of the Sturt Highway. It is about 9 kilometres (about 5.6 miles) east from Morkalla and 6 kilometres (about 3.7 miles) west from Meringur. Sunraysia is an illdefined district, sometimes incorrectly referred to as an economic region, located in northwestern Victoria and southwestern New South Wales in Australia. The region is renowned for its sunshine, intensive horticulture including grapes and oranges, and grain farms. Its main centre is Mildura, Victoria. Etymology The name ''Sunraysia'' derives from a contest that entrepreneur Jack De Garis held in 1919, as part of a promotion on behalf of the Australian Dried Fruits Association. The public were invited to submit a name to describe the dried fruits grown in the Mildura area. The winning name was ''Sun-Raysed'', which was modified as ''Sunraysia'' to describe the district as a whole. Mildura is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria and sits within the Northern Victoria electorate. It is a 37,529 km2 rural electorate in the far-north-west of the state, encompassing the regional towns of Hopetoun, Mildura, Ouyen, Red Cliffs and Robinvale. Morkalla is a locality in the Sunraysia region of Victoria, situated at the farthest west point on the Redcliffs-Meringur Road. It is about 31 km south-east of Yamba in South Australia and 9 km west of Karween, and is 11 km due south of the Sturt Highway. After World War I, the area was opened up to soldier settlers. Meringur, Victoria
Meringur is a farming settlement to the west of Mildura in northwestern Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Meringur and the surrounding area had a population of 67 down from 128 in 2011. It is located in the Millewa region at the end of the Red Cliffs-Meringur Road towards the South Australian border. The Post Office opened on 2 February 1926. The railway opened in 1925, and the station had facilities to handle passengers, sheep and grain. The line was extended to Morkalla in 1931, but the extension closed in 1965. The entire line was closed by 1988. The Millewa Pioneer Forest and Historical Village open-air museum is in Meringur. Sturt Highway is an Australian national highway in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is an important road link for the transport of passengers and freight between Sydney and Adelaide and the regions situated adjacent to the route. Soldier settlement was the settlement of land throughout parts of Australia by returning discharged soldiers under soldier settlement schemes administered by state governments after World War I and World War II.
