Karvalakki
A karvalakki ( fi, fur cap) is a cylinder-shaped, fur forage cap-styled hat typically worn in parts of Finland and Russia. Finnish TV presenter Hannu Karpo often wore a karvalakki on his show, '' Karpolla on asiaa''. In Finnish, the expression ''karvalakkimalli'' ("fur cap model") means a bare-bones, no-frills model, meaning the cheapest and most basic model that just works and does nothing extra. The term can also be used to describe anything that is very basic. Hannu Karpo
Hannu Karpo (born 5 March 1942, in Helsinki) is a Finnish reporter who hosted his own show, ''Karpolla on asiaa'', from 1981 to 2007. He was a reporter for Yleisradio from 1961 to 1981 before moving over to the competing network (MTV3). His own show was produced by his privately owned ''Pallosalama Oy'' production company which he founded in 1970. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Golden Venla award in 2015 along with fellow TV personality Riitta Väisänen. Show Karpo's show ran for 26 years during which he received a number of death threats. His shows led to 37 trials and zero convictions for him. He has also been asked to run for politics by numerous parties but has continually refused to do so. Forage Cap
Forage cap is the designation given to various types of military undress, fatigue or working headwear. These varied widely in form, according to country or period. The coloured peaked cap worn by the modern British Army for parade and other dress occasions is still officially designated as a forage cap. History In the 18th century, forage caps were small cloth caps worn by British cavalrymen when undertaking work duties such as foraging for food for their horses. The term was later applied to undress caps worn by men of all branches and regiments as a substitute for the full dress headdress. Karpolla on asiaa (''"Karpo has something to say"'', known also during some seasons as Karporaattori and Kyllä kansa tietää) was a popular Finnish television show with a journalistic touch. It was hosted by reporter Hannu Karpo and produced by his ''Pallosalama OY'' production company. The show ran from 1983 to 2007 on MTV3. Ushanka
An ushanka ( rus, уша́нка, p=ʊˈʂankə, from , "ears"), also called an ''ushanka-hat'' ( rus, ша́пка-уша́нка, p=ˈʂapkə ʊˈʂankə), is a Russian fur cap with ear-covering flaps that can be tied up to the crown of the cap, or fastened at the chin to protect the ears, jaw, and lower chin from the cold. An alternative is to bend the flaps back and tie them behind the head, which is called "ski-style" — this offers less protection from the elements, but much better visibility, essential for high-speed skiing. The dense fur also offers some protection against blunt impacts to the head. They are also traditionally worn in the Baltic region including Sweden and Finland and the whole eastern European region. The word ''papakha'' is of Turkic origin (''papakh)''. Styles There are two different Caucasian papakhas. One, called a ''papaha'', is a high fur hat, usually made of karakul sheepskin. The hat has the general appearance of a cylinder with one open end and is set upon the head in such a way as to have the brim touch the temples.
