Kari Karhunen
Karl Onni Uolcvi Karbunen (April 12, 1915 – September 16, 1992) was a Finnish probabilist and a mathematical statistician. He is best known for the Karhunen–Loève theorem and Karhunen–Loève transform. Education and career Karhunen received his master's degree in 1938 and his doctorate in 1950 from the University of Helsinki. The topic of his thesis was (in German) ''Über lineare Methoden in der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung'', in English ''On linear methods in probability and statistics''. The advisor of his thesis was the mathematician Rolf Nevanlinna. Karhunen worked as a lecturer at the University of Helsinki before leaving the academic world to be employed by the insurance corporation Suomi, becoming CEO of the company in 1963. Karhunen served in 1955 on the Finnish Committee for Mathematical Machines, which developed the first Finnish computer ESKO. Harold Hotelling
Harold Hotelling (; September 29, 1895 – December 26, 1973) was an American mathematical statistician and an influential economic theorist, known for Hotelling's law, Hotelling's lemma, and Hotelling's rule in economics, as well as Hotelling's T-squared distribution in statistics. He also developed and named the principal component analysis method widely used in finance, statistics and computer science. He was Associate Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University from 1927 until 1931, a member of the faculty of Columbia University from 1931 until 1946, and a Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1946 until his death. Michel Loève (January 22, 1907 – February 17, 1979) was a French-American probability theory, probabilist and mathematical statistics, mathematical statistician, of Jewish origin. He is known in mathematical statistics and probability theory for the Karhunen–Loève theorem and Karhunen–Loève transform. Michel Loève was born in Jaffa (then part of the Ottoman Empire) in 1907, to a Jewish family. He passed most of his childhood years in Egypt and received his primary and secondary education there in French schools.
