Kanabec County
Kanabec County ( ) is a county in the East Central part of U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,032. Its county seat is Mora. History The Minnesota legislature authorized creation of Kanabec County on March 13, 1858, with territory partitioned from Pine County. No county seat was designated at that time, and the county organization was not effected at that time. The county name came from the Ojibwe term ''ginebig'', meaning "snake," after the Snake River — ''Kanabecosippi'' (''Ginebigo-ziibi'' in the modern spelling) — which flows through the county. The area of Kanabec County was attached to Chisago County for administrative and judicial purposes. What county business was handled locally was performed by part-time County Auditor and County Treasurer, in a single room in a stopping place operated by lumber-trader George Staples at Millet Rapids. Mora is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Kanabec County. It is located at the junction of Minnesota highways 23 and 65. The population was 3,571 at the 2010 census. History Mora was platted in 1882 by Myron Kent. The city was named after Mora, Sweden. when Israel Israelson suggested the name of his hometown in Dalarna County, Sweden. The post office has been in operation at Mora since 1883 with Myron Kent being the first post master of Mora. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Mora is located 72 miles north of Minneapolis-St. Paul at the intersection of Minnesota highways 23 and 65. It is also 52 miles northeast of St. Cloud and 91 miles southwest of Duluth. The Kanabec County Courthouse, located at 18 Vine Street North in Mora, Minnesota, Mora, Kanabec County, Minnesota, Kanabec County in the United States, U.S. state of Minnesota is a beige brick, Romanesque architecture, Romanesque building, featuring a prominent 4-story center tower. The courthouse sits on a stone foundation. Arched windows and doorways with brown sandstone sills lend distinction. The eaves were built with unusual corbelled brick and the corners of the tower are decorated with tourelles. Hardwood floors and oak balusters lead to the second-floor courtrooms. Charles Skoglund built the building in 1894 for $7,200. It was designed by architects Buechner and Jacobson. Minnesota State Highway 47 (MN 47) is a highway in east–central Minnesota, which runs from its intersection with ''Central Avenue'' ( State Highway 65) in Minneapolis and continues north to its northern terminus at its intersection with U.S. Highway 169 in Aitkin. For part of its route (8 miles), it runs together with U.S. Highway 10 in Coon Rapids and Anoka.
