Kabul–Darulaman Tramway
The Kabul–Darulaman Tramway was a narrow gauge railway in Afghanistan. It was constructed after Emir Amanullah gave the order in 1923, and was long, running from Kabul to the planned city of Darulaman. Historical accounts The December 1922 issue of ''The Locomotive'' magazine mentions ''"Travellers from Afghanistan state a railway is being laid down for a distance of some six miles from Kabul to the site of the new city of Darulaman, and also that some of the rolling stock for it is being manufactured in the Kabul workshops."'' The August 1928 issue of ''The Locomotive'' mentions ''"the only railway at present in Afghanistan is five miles long, between Kabul and Darulaman."'' Three small steam locomotives were acquired from Henschel of Kassel in Germany. Closure The tramway closed (date unknown), and was dismantled in the 1940s, but the locomotives are preserved at the National Museum of Afghanistan in Darulaman. Darulaman
Darulaman ( fa, دارالامان) is a locality in the south-western fringes of Kabul, Afghanistan, forming part of District 6. The suburb was a planned city built in the 1920s under King Amanullah Khan. Amanullah Khan sought to turn Darulaman into a new modern capital city, and hired German companies and engineers to build roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The area is connected to Kabul some 16 km away via Darulaman Road, a long straight boulevard, which has been described by one analyst as "perhaps the most exquisite street of the capital Kabul". A narrow-gauge railway, the Kabul-Darulaman Tramway, was also built and operated through this boulevard. Numerous buildings and palaces were built there, including the Darul Aman Palace, National Museum of Afghanistan, and Tajbeg Palace. Henschel
Henschel & Son (german: Henschel und Sohn) was a German company, located in Kassel, best known during the 20th century as a maker of transportation equipment, including locomotives, trucks, buses and trolleybuses, and armoured fighting vehicles and weapons. Georg Christian Carl Henschel founded the factory in 1810 at Kassel. His son Carl Anton Henschel founded another factory in 1837. In 1848, the company began manufacturing locomotives. The factory became the largest locomotive manufacturer in Germany by the 20th century. Henschel built 10 articulated steam trucks, using Doble steam designs, for Deutsche Reichsbahn railways as delivery trucks. Rail Transport In Afghanistan
Afghanistan has three railway lines in the north of the country. The first is between Mazar-i-Sharif and the border town of Hairatan in Balkh province, which then connects with Uzbek Railways of Uzbekistan (opened 2011). The second links Torghundi in Herat province with Turkmen Railways of Turkmenistan (opened 1960). The third is between Turkmenistan and Aqina in Faryab province of Afghanistan (opened in 2016), which extends south to the city of Andkhoy. The country currently lacks a passenger rail service, but a new rail link from Herat to Khaf in Iran for both cargo and passengers was recently completed.
