Morna (music)
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole: ) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the merengue for Dominican Republic, the rumba for Cuba, and so on. The best internationally known morna singer was Cesária Évora. Morna and other genres of Cape Verdean music are also played in Cape Verdean migrant communities abroad, especially in New England in the US, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, West Africa and parts of Latin America. Gil Semedo Moreira (born October 25, 1974), better known by his stage name Gil Semedo, is a Cape Verdean recording artist, songwriter, businessman, and record producer. Dany Silva is a Cape Verdean singer, musician, composer and producer. Biography Dany Silva was born in the then colonial capital of Praia, he lives in Portugal since 1961. He started playing the violin in his father's island Boa Vista, Cape Verde. After his immigration to Portugal, he studied at Escola de Regentes Agrícolas de Santarém and later Engenheiro Técnico Agrário He was one of the singers who founded the band Os Charruos. Seven years later, he was part of the group Quinteto Académico+2 next to Mike Sergeant. Later, he took part with Four Kings. Codé di Dona, nickname of Gregório Vaz, (July 10, 1940—January 5, 2010) was a Cape Verdean musician and composer. He was born in Chaminé near São Domingos and lived in the locality of São Francisco, in the same municipality he was born has another Cape Verdean music expert Ano Novo. He is considered one of the chief figures of funaná, a music genre once known only in his native island of Santiago and achieved universal renaissance today. He was professionally dependent on agriculture as a farmer, he was also a flower keeper. Bana (singer)
Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Ferrinho
The ferrinho (in Cape Verdean Creole ferrinhu ) is a musical instrument, more precisely a scraped idiophone. It is made up by a metal bar (generally of iron) that is scraped by another metal object. The player holds the bar vertically, with its lower end in the palm of one hand and the upper end leaning against the shoulder. With the other hand, the player uses a metallic object, held horizontally, to scrape the bar with up-and-down movements. A custom-made ''ferrinho'' is usually 90 centimeters long, with a straight-angle section to ease handling. The ''ferrinho'' is used to mark the rhythm in funaná, a musical genre in Cape Verde. It is believed that the name “''ferrinho''” is an adaptation of “''ferrinhos''”, that is the name by which the triangle is known in popular music in Portugal. Cimboa
The ''cimboa'' (), also known as the ''cimbó'' , is a musical instrument from Cape Verde. It is a bowed chordophone that was traditionally used to be played with the batuque dances. The ''cimboa'' is composed of the instrument proper and its bow. The instrument belongs to the lute family, and so it possesses a neck attached to a sound box. The sound box is made of a calebash, or when it is hard to find, with a coconut shell, with a soundboard of stretched kid skin, fixed with reed pieces. Attached to the sound box there is a neck made of flexible wood (pine). At the end of the neck is a tuning peg of mahogany to tune the sole string of the instrument which is stretched between the nut set in the neck, and the bridge placed on the soundboard. The bow is made of a curved wood (called '' barnelo'' in Cape Verde) piece and strung with horse mane. Tabanka (Cape Verdean crioulo name of tabanca) is a musical genre of Cape Verdean music.
