KMIH
KMIH (88.9 FM) is a high school radio station broadcasting an adult album alternative format. Licensed to Mercer Island, Washington, United States, the station is currently owned by Mercer Island School District, with studios at Mercer Island High School. This station is one of three high school radio stations in the Seattle Metro area, the other two being KNHC, and KASB. KMIH also services as the only FM service licensed to the City of Mercer Island and as such is used as one of the primary emergency communication methods for the city. KLSW is a Contemporary Christian formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Covington, Washington, serving the Seattle metropolitan area. KLSW is owned and operated by Educational Media Foundation. History KMCQ, who signed on the air on November 28, 1968 as KCIV-FM and changed call letters to KMCQ on June 20, 1984, has been serving The Dalles/Hood River, Oregon area since its sign on, as a beautiful music station under the KCIV-FM calls, then mostly as a Hot AC under the KMCQ calls until March 30, 2007. In 2005, a realignment of FM frequencies in the Pacific Northwest area resulted in several stations moving to new locations. KMCQ would end up being one of the stations relocating in the shuffle as the 104.5 signal changed its city of license to Covington, Washington, a suburb of Seattle in southwest King County. High School Radio
High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles. The first call letters of the station were KFIF. The station made its formal debut on the air and was officially dedicated in early May of 1923, between the hours of 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., on the opening night of the 5th annual Benson Tech Show. Covington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 20,777 at the time of the 2020 census. Prior to the 2010 census, Covington was counted as part of Covington-Sawyer-Wilderness CDP. History The area presently known as Covington was originally known as Jenkins Prairie.
