Jussieu Peninsula
__NOTOC__ Jussieu Peninsula is a peninsula located at the south east end of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded by Proper Bay and Spalding Cove within the natural harbour known as Port Lincoln to the north, Spencer Gulf to the east and the Great Australian Bight to the south. While it was first explored and mapped by Matthew Flinders during February 1802, Flinders did not name it. In 1913, the name proposed by François Péron and Louis de Freycinet from Baudin's expedition when it visited later in 1802 was declared as the peninsula's official name by the Government of South Australia. Jussieu refers to the French botanist, Antoine Laurent de Jussieu. While parts of its surface have been cleared and used for agricultural purposes in the past, it is currently occupied by two protected areas: the Lincoln National Park and the Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Lincoln National Park, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Lincoln National Park is a locality located on the Jussieu Peninsula at the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula in the Australia, Australian state of South Australia about west of the state capital of Adelaide city centre, Adelaide and about south of the city of Port Lincoln. The boundaries of the locality were created on 30 September 2003 for the “long established name.” The locality covers the full extent of the Jussieu Peninsula east of the eastern boundary of the cadastral unit, the Hundred of Sleaford. The full extent of the locality does align with the full extent of the Hundred of Flinders, a cadastral unit with an area of , and which was proclaimed by George Le Hunte, Governor Le Hunte in 1903 and which was named after the British navigator, Matthew Flinders. Sleaford, South Australia
Sleaford is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located at the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking the Great Australian Bight about west of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat of Port Lincoln. The boundaries of the locality were created on October 2003 for the “long established name” which is derived from Sleaford Bay. The boundary with the locality of Tulka was altered in both 2006 and 2011. Sleaford consists of land at the southern tip of Eyre Peninsula located south of a line running west from the western end of Proper Bay within the natural harbour known as Port Lincoln, and which is bounded from the west to the south-east by the coastline overlooking the Great Australian Bight including the western half of Sleaford Bay and whose eastern boundary is located in the western part of the Jussieu Peninsula. Memory Cove is a bay located on the East coast of Jussieu Peninsula on Eyre Peninsula in South Australia approximately South-East of Port Lincoln. It is one of the natural features named by Matthew Flinders in memory of the eight crew who were lost on a cutter that capsized sometime after being launched from HM Sloop ''Investigator'' to search for water on 21 February 1802. Cape Donington
Cape Donington is a headland in the Australian state of South Australia located at the most northerly part of the Jussieu Peninsula on the east coast of Eyre Peninsula in about east of the city of Port Lincoln. It is the southern entrance point for the natural harbour known as Port Lincoln. The cape is described by one source as being "the Nrthextremity of a peninsula which extends Nrthfrom the coast", that "this extension forms the E stside of Spalding Cove" and that "about SuthW stof the cape, the land rises to a wooded summit, high." It was named by the Royal Navy officer, Matthew Flinders, on 25 February 1802 reportedly after "his native village in Lincolnshire". Cape Catastrophe is a headland in the Australian state of South Australia located at the southeast tip of Jussieu Peninsula on Eyre Peninsula. It is one of the natural features named by the British navigator Matthew Flinders in memory of the eight crew who were lost from a cutter that capsized sometime after being launched from HM Sloop ''Investigator'' to search for water on 21 February 1802. Flinders also nominated the headland as being the western point of the mouth of Spencer Gulf. Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south east tip of Jussieu Peninsula on Eyre Peninsula and on a number of nearby islands about south-south east of Port Lincoln. Antoine Laurent De Jussieu
Antoine Laurent de Jussieu (; 12 April 1748 – 17 September 1836) was a French botanist, notable as the first to publish a natural classification of flowering plants; much of his system remains in use today. His classification was based on an extended unpublished work by his uncle, the botanist Bernard de Jussieu. Life Jussieu was born in Lyon, France, in 1748, as one of 10 children, to Christophle de Jussieu, an amateur botanist. His father's three younger brothers were also botanists. He went to Paris in 1765 to be with his uncle Bernard and to study medicine, graduating with a doctorate in 1770, with a thesis on animal and vegetable physiology. His uncle introduced him to the Jardin du Roi, where he was appointed as a botany Demonstrator and deputy to L. G. Le Monnier, professor of botany there in 1770. Eyre Peninsula
The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded by the Spencer Gulf on the east, the Great Australian Bight on the west, and the Gawler Ranges to the north. Originally called Eyre’s Peninsula, it was named after explorer Edward John Eyre, who explored parts of the peninsula in 1839–41.
