Jondal Tunnel
The Jondal Tunnel ( no, Jondalstunnelen) is a road tunnel in the Hardanger region of Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel is part of Norwegian County Road 49 and it lies in Kvinnherad and Ullensvang municipalities. The long tunnel was built to offer a better route between the cities of Bergen and Oslo. Cars can drive from Bergen to Tørvikbygda, then take a ferry to Jondal, then go through this tunnel, then a short drive to the Folgefonna Tunnel before getting to the town of Odda. From there it is a short drive on the narrow route 13 to the European route E134 highway which leads to Oslo. Work on the tunnel began in October 2009. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk. The county is one of two counties in Norway that have Nynorsk as their official written language form (the others are neutral as to which form people use). European Route E134
European highway E 134 ( no, Europavei 134) is a European highway that crosses Norway starting at Haugesund Airport, Karmøy near the city of Haugesund on the west coast, heading over Haukeli, passing the city of Drammen, and ending in Vassum on the east side of the Oslofjord Tunnel. With the highest point at above sea level, the road is sensitive to snow conditions and foul weather during the winter season, during which the mountainous sections, especially near Haukelifjell skiing center, may be closed in short periods. Norwegian National Road 13
National Road 13 ( no, Riksvei 13, ) is a national road which runs from the town of Stavanger in Rogaland county to the village of Sogndalsfjøra in Vestland county. The route is long and runs south–north through Rogaland and Vestland counties, following a more inland path than the European route E39 highway. Prior to 2019, the northern terminus of the road was at the village of Balestrand, but in 2019, the section of Norwegian County Road 55 from Balestrand to Sogndalsfjøra was added to National Road 13, extending it all the way to Sogndalsfjøra. In 2020, a new tunnel was opened between Stavanger and Tau, Ryfylke Tunnel, the world's deepest public road tunnel. Odda (town)
is a town in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The town is the administrative centre of the municipality and the largest urban area in the whole Hardanger district. The town is located at the southern end of the Sørfjorden, in a narrow valley between towering mountains and the lake Sandvinvatnet to the south. The large Folgefonna glacier lies just west of Odda, high up in the mountains. The village of Odda was declared a "town" in 2004. Folgefonna Tunnel
The Folgefonna Tunnel ( no, Folgefonntunnelen) is a long road tunnel in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel connects the village of Eitrheim and the town of Odda at the head of Sørfjorden in Ullensvang Municipality to the village of Austrepollen at the head of Maurangsfjorden in Kvinnherad municipality. The tunnel runs under the large Folgefonna glacier and Folgefonna National Park. The tunnel opened in 2001 and is Norway's fourth longest road tunnel. It reduced travel time between these two places from four hours all the way down to ten minutes. It is part of County Road 49. In year 2012, the long Jondal Tunnel was built a short distance from this tunnel. Using these two tunnels and a ferry, the road distance between the E134 highway in the town of Odda and the city of Bergen is much shorter than before. Jondal (village)
Jondal is a village in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It was the administrative centre of the former Jondal municipality prior to its dissolution in 2020. The village is located on the southern shore of the Hardangerfjorden, about southeast of the city of Bergen. It is located on the Folgefonna peninsula, about northwest of the Folgefonna glacier in Folgefonna National Park. The village of Kysnesstranda lies about to the south. Hardanger
Hardanger is a traditional district in the western part of Norway, dominated by the Hardangerfjord and its inner branches of the Sørfjorden and the Eid Fjord. It consists of the municipalities of Ullensvang, Eidfjord, Ulvik and Kvam, and is located inside the county of Vestland. The area is dominated by the vast Hardangervidda plateau in the east and the large Folgefonna glacier on the central Folgefonna peninsula.
