John Peter Grant Of Rothiemurchus
John Peter Grant, 13th Earl of Dysart (born 22 October 1946), styled Lord Huntingtower from 2003 to 2011, also known as Johnnie Grant, is a Scottish peer and landowner. Together with his son James, he is responsible for Rothiemurchus, in the Scottish Highlands, including part of Rothiemurchus Forest and Braeriach, which at 4252 ft (1296 m) is the third highest mountain in Britain. Dysart is the son of Lt Col John Peter Grant, MBE 16th of Rothiemurchus, and his wife Lady Katherine, née Greaves. In 1971, Dysart married Philippa Chance MBE, by whom he has three children: *Louisa Katherine Lindsay (b. 1975) *James Patrick Grant, (b. 1977) *Alexandra Rose Grant (b. 1985) Since 1975 Philippa worked in partnership with her husband in developing Rothiemurchus from a traditional highland estate to the present operation, which involves approximately fifty team members working in a complex, multiple land-use business. Inverness-shire ( gd, Siorrachd Inbhir Nis) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. Earl of Dysart (pronounced ) is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1643 and has been held continuously since then by descendants of the 1st Earl, William Murray. Creation The title was created in 1643 for William Murray, who had earlier represented Fowey and East Looe in the English House of Commons. He was made Lord Huntingtower at the same time, also in the Peerage of Scotland. William Murray had been a lifelong friend of King Charles I, in fact having been his whipping boy while the latter was Prince of Wales. Succession Murray was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth, the 2nd Countess. In 1670 she resigned the peerage and received a new grant thereof by patent with precedency of her father, and with remainder to her heirs of the body, failing which to her heirs whatsoever. Royal Zoological Society Of Scotland
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is a learned society and registered charity based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was founded by Thomas Haining Gillespie in 1909. In 1913, Edinburgh Town Council bought a large plot of land on Corstorphine Hill for the society - this later opened to the public as Edinburgh Zoo. The society received its Royal Charter in 1913. The principal objective of the society mentioned in the original charter is: To promote, facilitate and encourage the study of zoology and kindred subjects and to foster and develop amongst the people an interest in and knowledge of animal life. Cairngorms
The Cairngorms ( gd, Am Monadh Ruadh) are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands of Scotland closely associated with the mountain Cairn Gorm. The Cairngorms became part of Scotland's second national park (the Cairngorms National Park) on 1 September 2003. Although the Cairngorms give their name to, and are at the heart of, the Cairngorms National Park, they only form one part of the national park, alongside other hill ranges such as the Angus Glens and the Monadhliath, and lower areas like Strathspey. The Cairngorms consists of high plateaux at about above sea level, above which domed summits (the eroded stumps of once much higher mountains ) rise to around . Braeriach
Braeriach or Brae Riach ( gd, Am Bràigh Riabhach, 'the brindled upland') is the third-highest mountain in Scotland and all of the British Isles, after Ben Nevis and Ben Macdui, rising above sea level. It is in the Scottish Highlands and is the highest point in the western massif of the Cairngorms, separated from the central section by the Lairig Ghru pass. The summit is a crescent-shaped plateau, overlooking several corries. The lingering snows of Braeriach are amongst the most persistent snow patches in Scotland and the whole British Isles. The north-facing corrie of Garbh Coire Mor has been snow-free just nine times in the last one hundred years: 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022 – but four times in the six years to 2022. Rothiemurchus Forest
Rothiemurchus Forest is a remnant of the Caledonian Forest at near Aviemore, Inverness-shire, Scotland. It is in the Highland region. The forest is popular for recreation and contains important independent wildlife, including the osprey, Scottish crossbill, capercaillie, crested tit and European wildcat. Stretching from the River Spey to the high mountain plateau, Rothiemurchus sits within the Cairngorms National Park. Much of the forest is within the Rothiemurchus Estate, in the ownership of the Grant family since the 1540s. The estate is now owned and managed by Johnnie Grant, 13th Earl of Dysart and 17th Laird of Rothiemurchus, along with his family.
