''Jean de Paris'' is an opéra comique in two acts by French composer François-Adrien Boieldieu and librettist Claude Godard d'Aucourt de Saint-Just. History The work had its premiere on 4 April 1812 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and was performed there until 1863. The opera was dedicated to the composer André Grétry. ''Jean de Paris'' was a great success for Boieldieu, who returned to the Parisian opera stage in 1812 with this opera comique after a seven-year stay in Russia. In the same year as the premiere in Paris, ''Jean de Paris'' was also performed in various German translations in Germany and Austria. Ignaz Franz Castelli provided his translation for the Theater am Kärntnertor (Vienna), Ignaz von Seyfried worked for the Theater an der Wien and the translation by Karl Alexander Herklots was staged in Berlin. Horst Seeger (6 November 1926 – 2 January 1999), pseudonyme ''Horst Schell'', was a German musicologist, music critic, dramaturg, librettist and opera director. Leben Born in Erkner, Seeger studied musicology at the Humboldt University of Berlin with Walter Vetter, Ernst Hermann Meyer and Hans-Heinz Dräger and worked as a music journalist and critic from 1954. From 1959 to 1960 he was editor-in-chief of the journal ''Musik und Gesellschaft''. From 1960-1973 he was chief dramaturge at the Komische Oper Berlin. Anne-Alexandrine d'Herbez, known under the name Alexandrine Saint-Aubin, (9 April 1793 - 30 March 1867), was a French operatic soprano. Alexandrine Marie Agathe Gavaudan-Ducamel (15 September 1781 – 24 June 1850) was a French opera singer who sang leading soprano roles at the Opéra Comique for over 20 years. Born in Paris with the surname "Ducamel", she later married the tenor Jean-Baptiste-Sauveur Gavaudan after which she generally performed under the name Madame Gavaudan. She retired from the stage in 1822 and spent her later years in Passy where she died at the age of 68. A breeches role (also pants role or trouser role, or Hosenrolle) is one in which an actress appears in male clothing. Breeches, tight-fitting knee-length pants, were the standard male garment at the time these roles were introduced. The theatrical term ''travesti'' covers both this sort of cross-dressing and also that of male actors dressing as female characters. Jean Elleviou (14 June 1769 in Rennes – 5 May 1842 in Paris) was a French operatic tenor, one of the most celebrated French singers of his time. Born Pierre-Jean-Baptiste-François Elleviou, he made his debut at the Comédie-Italienne in Paris in 1790, as a baritone in the role of Alexis in Monsigny's '' Le déserteur'', and the following year as a tenor in Dalayrac's ''Philippe et Georgette''.
