James Beard Foundation Award
The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented by the James Beard Foundation to recognize chefs, restaurateurs, authors and journalists in the United States. They are scheduled around James Beard's May 5 birthday. The media awards are presented at a dinner in New York City; the chef and restaurant awards were also presented in New York until 2015, when the foundation's annual gala moved to Chicago. Chicago will continue to host the Awards until 2027. History The awards were established in 1990, when the foundation expanded its chef awards and combined them with '' Cook's'' Magazine's Who's Who of American Cooking and French's Food and Beverage Book Awards. In addition to the chef, restaurant, and book awards, journalism awards were added in 1993, which expanded to broadcast media in 1994, and restaurant design awards were first given in 1995. ''Doumar's Cones and BBQ'' is a Norfolk, Virginia restaurant. Historically, the business operated at the Ocean View Amusement Park. At that location Abe Doumar, the business' creator, is credited with creating the world's first ice cream cone. Restaurant Doumar is said to have created the first ice cream cone in 1904 at the St. Louis Exposition. In 1913, Doumar opened a vending location on the boardwalk of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront in that popular resort city. Later, he opened another restaurant at Ocean View Amusement Park. After a hurricane destroyed the stands in 1933, Abe's brother George opened the new restaurant at its location on Monticello Avenue in 1934. Swan Oyster Depot is a seafood eatery and cultural landmark located in the Polk Gulch neighborhood of San Francisco, California. It opened there in 1903 and except for a brief hiatus and rebuilding period following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, it has been running continuously in the same venue since that time. This makes it one of the longest continuous businesses and dining establishments in the United States. White House Sub Shop is a submarine sandwich deli founded in 1946 at Atlantic City, New Jersey which sells various specialty sandwiches. The deli is considered a historic landmark and has served multiple celebrities. History The White House Sub Shop was founded in 1946 on Arctic Ave in Atlantic City by Anthony "Tony" Basile along with his Aunt Basilia and Uncle Alfred "Fritz" Sacco. Prior to that date, the front of the building on Arctic Ave. was Mr. Basile's tailor shop. While business was scarce during WWII, his wife would sell sandwiches (on breads that she purchased from Formica's bakery across the street) that she made in her kitchen out of the back side door. Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse
Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse is a well-known BBQ restaurant in Dallas, Texas that was founded by William Jennings Bryan Jr. (known as Sonny) in 1958 near the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. It has seven locations in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW) while closing all franchise units in Utah by mid-2014. Sonny Bryan's also has one of the largest catering companies in DFW. History The Bryan family has operated barbecue restaurants in the Dallas area for over a century. Sonny's grandfather, Elias Bryan, first opened his Bryan's Barbecue in 1910 while Sonny's father William Jennings "Red" Bryan opened Red Bryan's Smokehouse in 1930. Camp Washington is a city neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It is located north of Queensgate, east of Fairmount, and west of Clifton and University Heights. Camp Washington Chili
Camp Washington Chili is a Cincinnati chili parlor founded in 1940 by Steve Andon and Fred Zannbus in the neighborhood of Camp Washington, Cincinnati, Camp Washington, near downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati, in southwestern Ohio. A well known Cincinnati landmark, the parlor is located at 3005 Colerain Avenue, and the current owner is the Greek-born John Johnson. The Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant is a seafood restaurant located on the lower level of Grand Central Terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. History The restaurant space was first opened as the Grand Central Terminal Restaurant.
