Jadran (cigarette)
Jadran is a Croatian brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by the Adris grupa (formerly known as ''Tvornica Duhana Rovinj''), a division of British American Tobacco. Jadran means '' The Adriatic'' in South Slavic languages. History The brand was founded in the Socialist Republic of Croatia and quickly became one of the most popular brands in the Croatian-speaking parts of Yugoslavia, along with ''Opatija''. The brand was mainly popular with the upper-class within Socialist Croatia, and is one of the few brands to survive after the Breakup of Yugoslavia and Croatia became its own country, along with ''Drina''. Jadran was named after a sea, similar to other Yugoslavian brands which were named after seas and rivers like ''Morava,'' and ''Drava''. A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing a combustible material, typically tobacco, that is rolled into thin paper for smoking. Elita (cigarette)
Elita is a Latvian brand of cigarettes that was produced between 1967 and 2009 by the Latvian company ''"Rīgas Tabakas Fabrika"'' and later by British American Tobacco. According to the data submitted by the Latvian State Revenue Service, Elita was the most sold brand filtered cigarettes in Latvia for the period of about twenty years. History Elita cigarettes were launched in 1967. The cigarettes were mostly distributed in Russia, Latvian SSR and Lithuanian SSR. Elita used an American blend of tobacco in their cigarettes. During the Soviet period, the cigarettes were produced in soft packs, but after the restoration of independence of Latvia, packs were produced in hard packages with twenty cigarettes in each pack, and were distributed in cartons consisting of ten packs. LD (cigarette)
LD (short for ''Liggett Ducat'', the name of the original manufacturer) is a Russian brand of cigarettes, currently owned by Japan Tobacco. In the United States, it is manufactured in Turkey for JT International U.S.A. History LD was first launched in Russia in 1999 and quickly became Russia's number one cigarette brand. Liggett Ducat was bought in 2000 by the Gallaher Group, which in turn was acquired by JTI in 2007. The original Liggett Ducat factory, where LD was manufactured, was shut down in 2016. In 2016, JTI announced they would introduce the LD brand on the United States cigarette market with the Red, Silver, and Menthol (Green) varieties. Jin Ling
Jin Ling is a Russian brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by the Kaliningrad-based manufacturer Baltic Tobacco Company (russian: link=yes, Балтийская табачная фабрика, BTC). Other places where this brand is manufactured include Ukraine, Moldova, Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. History The name is derived from Jinling, the older name of Nanjing, where the brand was originally developed by the Chinese state-owned Nanjing Tobacco Factory. After the brand died out, the Baltic Tobacco Company re-introduced it in 1997. The packet design resembles the American brand Camel in colour, typeface and layout, but instead of a camel, it features a mouflon. Jin Ling cigarettes are only sold illegally and the brand is the first to be designed explicitly for smuggling. Sobranie (russian: Собрание, "Gathering", "Collection", "Assembly") is a brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Gallaher Group, a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco. History The Balkan Sobranie tobacco business was established in London in 1879 by Albert Weinberg (born Romania 1849), whose naturalization papers dated 1886 confirm his nationality and show that he had emigrated to England in the 1870s at a time when hand-made cigarettes in the eastern European and Russian tradition were becoming fashionable in Europe. It is one of the oldest cigarette brands in the world. Albert's young cousin Isaiah Redstone (1884-1963) joined him in the business and registered the " Balkan Sobranie" trademark, later shortened to Sobranie. Time ( he, טיים) is an Israeli brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Dubek. History The Time brand, first launched in 1965, is the most popular cigarette brand in Israel. It is an American blend cigarette, available in two lengths: 80 mm and 100 mm. In March 2013, it was reported that Dubek contacted Ben Ezra, the Kashrut, Kosher supervisor, to approve their brands (which are Noblesse, Time and Golf) as Kosher for Passover. During the holiday, Jewish law forbids Chametz – anything consisting of grains that may have come in contact with water, starting the process of fermentation. Smart (alternative name: ''Smart Export'') is an Austrian brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by ''Austria Tabak GmbH'' (''Austria Tobacco Company''). History ''Smart'' was created on September 7, 1959, as a filter cigarette in Austria. By mid-1962 it became the second most popular cigarette brand in Austria and finally in 1968 it ousted the brand Austria 3 (also known as ''A3'') from square one in terms of popularity. The ''"export"'' was itself banned in 1975 from the market. Packaging The design of Smart Export was created in 1959 in Austria and is attributed to Nicotiana, tobacco plants. Partner was a Macedonian brand of cigarettes that was owned and manufactured by ''Makedonija Tabak''. History The brand was founded after the end of World War II and was manufactured by the company "Makedonija Tabak", in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia. It was one of the few Yugoslavian brands sold outside of Yugoslavia, in the Soviet Union, Poland, Finland and Japan. While Partner wasn't as known or popular as Drina, Jadran or Lovćen, it still sold well within socialist Macedonia and, to a lesser extent, socialist Serbia. However, during the breakup of Yugoslavia, the company suffered and eventually the brand ceased to exist, several years after Macedonia became its own country. Morava (cigarette)
Morava was a Serbian brand of cigarettes which was owned and manufactured by Philip Morris Operations. History Morava was founded in the Socialist Republic of Serbia and named after the river Morava, by which the majority of cigarettes were delivered. Tobacco was forbidden at the time, but, following riots, the law was amended to forbid only the plant. After significant shortages, Morava was assigned a contract with the United Kingdom brand Phillip Morris to import pre-made cigarettes. The company used the same river for transport that it was named after. Morava was one of the brands that had the highest sales within the Yugoslavian market, and was one of the few cigarette brands (along with Drina) to survive after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Lovćen is a Montenegrin brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by the ''Duvanski Kombinat Podgorica'' in Cetinjski Put, Podgorica, Montenegro (formerly called the ''Duvanski Kombinat Titograd''). The brand is named after the Lovćen mountain. History Lovćen was created in the 1960s in the Socialist Republic of Montenegro (then part of Yugoslavia) it was also sold in neighbouring Serbian Republic. It has since survived the breakup of Yugoslavia and is still being sold today. Packaging The pack features a white and red colour pattern, similar to that associated with Marlboro. The old, third variant Yugoslavian pack featured a red star, but it has since been removed. Laika (''russian: Лайка'') was a Soviet brand of cigarettes, which was manufactured by various Soviet tobacco companies, but most notably the ''"Tabachnaya Fabrika Dukat Moscow"'' and the ''"Tabachnaya Fabrika No.1 Leningrad"''. The brand was named after the dog Laika, the first animal launched into orbit by the USSR. History Laika cigarettes were created in 1957 to honour Laika, a dog sent into space by the Soviet space program. The cigarettes were produced under supervision of the Ministry of Food Industry. The cigarettes were mainly sold in the Soviet Union, but also in the United Kingdom, the People's Republic of Bulgaria and Finland as Duty Free variants. A few TV advertisements were made for Laika cigarettes. It is unknown when the brand was discontinued, but it is speculated that Laika cigarettes were ended when the dissolution of the Soviet Union happened. Filter 57 (cigarette)
Filter 57 is a Slovenian brand of cigarettes, owned and manufactured by ''"Tobačna Ljubljana'', a division of Imperial Tobacco. In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the cigarettes are known as ''"57"'' and are manufactured by the Iranian Tobacco Company. History The brand was created in 1957 in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia and also became the first filtered cigarette in Yugoslavia. The difference from other brands at the time, such as Drina, Jadran, Drava and so on, was that these cigarettes were packed upside down, which made them a really popular smoke amongst the Slovenian working class. The reason for this, was that during work time, the hands of these workers were often dirty, and thus when they would grab a cigarette by the filter, it would get dirty too. However, if the filter laid at the bottom, the paper would get dirty when grabbed, but that wouldn't a problem because it would get burned up anyway, allowing the worker to place the filter in the mouth cleanly.
