Jacob Pesman
Major General Jacob Jan Pesman (4 January 1888 – 2 January 1950) was a Dutch military officer during the Second World War. He was a commander in the KNIL colonial forces of the Dutch East Indies, and was the commander of one of its units during the Japanese invasion of Java. Military career Pesman had joined the armed forces by 1910, when he was a second lieutenant, and by July 1939 he had been promoted to major general. During the Dutch East Indies campaign, Pesman was assigned command of the "Bandung Group" of the KNIL's forces in Java, comprising around 9,000 men. The unit fought in the Battle of Kalijati, in a counterattack attempt to recapture Kalijati Airfield which had been seized by Japanese invaders. The counterattack was heavily hindered by Japanese air superiority and the involved unit suffered significant casualties. Thesinge
Thesinge (Gronings: ''Taisen'') is a village in the municipality of Groningen, in the Dutch province of Groningen. The Benedictine monastery of ''Germania'' was founded in Thesinge in 1205. History The village was first mentioned in 786 or 787 as Thelingi, and means "(monastery) of the people of Thiasa (person)". The Benedictine monastery Germania was founded in 1205 near the village. Thesinge is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village with a rectangular structure. The monastery was destroyed in 1584 during the Reformation. Most of the buildings were demolished 1629 except for the church. The St Felicitas Church of the monastery became the Dutch Reformed church. It was built in the 13th century, but extensively modified and rebuilt in 1786. The church was restored between 1972 and 1973. It was decommissioned in 1971, and is used to weddings. Hoten Camp
The Hoten Camp was a World War II prisoner of war camp in Manchuria. The camp was located near Mukden (now Shenyang) and was initially called Mukden POW Camp. Archival records indicate 1,420 Allied prisoners were held here, 1,193 of whom were liberated, and 224 of whom did not survive their captivity. Prisoners at the camp included soldiers from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. Medical Experimentation The camp was associated with Unit 731, a biological weapons group of the Imperial Japanese Army. Poor conditions, lack of food and proper medical attention, in addition to medical experiments were conducted on the POW's at Mukden/Hoten, resulting in many deaths.
