János Apáczai Csere
János Apáczai Csere (10 June 1625 – 31 December 1659) was a Transylvanian Hungarian polyglot, pedagogist, philosopher and theologian, famous for his work ''The Hungarian Encyclopedia'', the first textbook to be written in Hungarian.. The ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' calls him "the leading Protestant scholar and writer" of 17th-century Hungary. Life He was born in Apáca (today in Brașov County, Romania) on 10 June 1625; the "Apáczai" in his name is an indication of his birthplace. The Csere family into which he was born were of the minor nobility. After college studies in Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia), one of Csere's teachers there, Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld, persuaded the local bishop, István Katona, to fund a scholarship for Apáczai to continue his education in the Netherlands. The Counter-Reformation (), also called the Catholic Reformation () or the Catholic Revival, was the period of Catholic resurgence that was initiated in response to the Protestant Reformation. William Ames (; Latin: ''Guilielmus Amesius''; 157614 November 1633) was an English Puritan minister, philosopher, and controversialist. He spent much time in the Netherlands, and is noted for his involvement in the controversy between the Calvinists and the Arminians. Early life and education Ames was born at Ipswich, and was brought up by a maternal uncle, Robert Snelling of Boxford. Petrus Ramus
Petrus Ramus (french: Pierre de La Ramée; Anglicized as Peter Ramus ; 1515 – 26 August 1572) was a French humanist, logician, and educational reformer. A Protestant convert, he was a victim of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Early life He was born at the village of Cuts, Picardy; his father was a farmer.
