Julien Creuzet
Julien Creuzet (born 1986) is a French-Caribbean conceptual artist and professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Creuzet's practice encompasses sculpture, poetry, music, video, and animation and often engages with topics of creolization, migration decolonization, and the complexities of French colonial history. In 2021, Creuzet was nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp, and in 2022, he received Art Basel's donnés Prize. In 2024, Creuzet represented France at the 60th Venice Biennale, becoming the first black man, and one of the youngest artists, to do so. Early life and education Creuzet was born in the eastern Parisian suburb Le Blanc-Mesnil, Le Blanc Mesnil. He and his family moved to Martinique when he was 4 years old. The Beaux-Arts de Paris is a French ''grande école'' whose primary mission is to provide high-level arts education and training. This is classical and historical School of Fine Arts in France. The Marcel Duchamp Prize (in French : ''Prix Marcel Duchamp'') is an annual award given to a young artist by the Association pour la Diffusion Internationale de l'Art Français (ADIAF). The winner receives €35,000 personally and up to €30,000 in order to produce an exhibition of their work in the Modern Art museum (Centre Georges Pompidou). The prize is named after the artist Marcel Duchamp. Name The name Le Blanc-Mesnil was recorded for the first time in the 11th century as . Creole peoples are ethnic groups formed during the European colonial era, from the mass displacement of peoples brought into sustained contact with others from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, who converged onto a colonial territory to which they had not previously belonged. Often involuntarily uprooted from their original home, the settlers were obliged to develop and creatively merge the desirable elements from their diverse backgrounds, to produce new varieties of social, linguistic and cultural norms that superseded the prior forms.
