Juan María Lekuona
Juan María Lekuona Berasategi (Oiartzun, Guipúzcoa, 1927 - Donostia, 5 December 2005) was a Basque poet in euskera. He was Manuel Lekuona's nephew. In 1953 he became a priest. After his residence in Rome, where he defended his thesis, he worked in Añorga, near Donostia. He read Gabriel Aresti's books in those years and that is why his work was very orientated to social fight in the beginning, as we can see in ''Mindura gaur'', his first book. He was the first president of EIZIE in 1987. His studies about bersolarism (oral Basque tradition) are very important and he became a member of Euskaltzaindia Euskaltzaindia (; often translated Royal Academy of the Basque Language) is the official academic language regulatory institution which watches over the Basque language. Euskaltzaindia
Euskaltzaindia (; often translated Royal Academy of the Basque Language) is the official academic language regulatory institution which watches over the Basque language. It conducts research, seeks to protect the language, and establishes standards of use. It is known in Spanish as ''La Real Academia de la Lengua Vasca'' (being under the royal patronage of the Spanish monarchy, like the Real Academia Española) and in French as ''Académie de la Langue Basque''. EIZIE
EIZIE stands for ''Euskal Itzultzaile, Zuzentzaile eta Interpreteen Elkartea''; that is, the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language. Origins and organization The Association was founded in 1987 by a small group of Basque professional translators who believed that it was important to provide a formal structure for this growing professional sector. Its first president was Juan Mari Lekuona (Oiartzun, 1927 – San Sebastián, 2005). The Association, which is officially registered in both Spain and France, consists of professional translators whose original or target language is Basque. Gabriel Aresti
Gabriel Aresti Segurola (October 14, 1933 – June 5, 1975) was one of the most important writers and poets in Basque language in the 20th century. He grew up in Bilbao, which was a Spanish-speaking environment. Although his father talked to his parents in Basque language, the child Gabriel did not have Basque as mother language. He was a self-taught student of the language, at the age of 21 he collaborated in some magazines. His literary career began with a work influenced by the symbolism, Maldan Behera (Downhill). His most important works are, however, Harri eta Herri (Stone and Country, 1964), Euskal Harria (The Basque Stone, 1968) and Harrizko Herri Hau (This Country of Stone, 1971), related to the social realism. He also cultivated other genres, like the novel, the short story and theatre. He was an excellent translator of Basque; he translated authors like Federico García Lorca, T. S.
