Joseph Single
Joseph Daniel Single (22 February 1826 – 29 December 1900) was an Australian politician. He was born around Castlereagh to farmer John Single and Sarah Baker. He became a pastoralist and held the Tellaraga station in the Gwydir district. Around 1854 he married Ann Lydia Frazer, with whom he had sixteen children. Castlereagh, New South Wales
Castlereagh is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Castlereagh is north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Penrith and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. History The suburb is one of the most historic sites in Australia's colonial history, being one of the five Macquarie towns officially proclaimed on 6 December 1810. Governor Lachlan Macquarie recorded the following in his journal "the Township for the Evan or Nepean District I have named Castlereagh in honor (sic) of Lord Viscount Castlereagh", Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1805–1806. Gwydir River
Gwydir River (locally wɑe̯də, a major inland perennial river of the Barwon catchment within the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the Northern Tablelands, North West Slopes, and Orana districts of New South Wales, Australia. The river rises at the junction of the Rocky River and Boorolong Creek, at Yarrowyck, northwest of Uralla and flows generally northwest and west, joined by over thirty-four tributaries, including the Horton and Mehi rivers, before reaching its confluence with the Barwon River, north east of Collarenebri; descending over its course. The flow of the river is impounded by Copeton Dam, with storage used for town water supply, stock, domestic use and irrigation. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. James Tobias Ryan
James Tobias Ryan (4 January 1818 – 17 October 1899) was an Australian politician. He was born at South Creek near Penrith to ex-convict printer John Michael Tobin Ryan and Mary Rope. After a brief education he worked as a timber getter, ploughman, milkman and horsebreaker with his father, and then settled on the Nepean River. On 16 August 1838 he married Mary Dempsey, with whom he had seven children. From 1840 he worked as a butcher at Penrith, and he also acquired property on the Macquarie and Castlereagh rivers. He built the grand Emu Hall on the Nepean River, and in 1860 was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Nepean. He served until his defeat in 1872. By this time his gambling had left him bankrupt and he subsequently worked as a hotelier and asphalter before being bankrupted again in 1885. Patrick Shepherd
Patrick Lindesay Crawford Shepherd (17 March 1831 – 3 July 1903) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to nurseryman Thomas Shepherd and Jane Henderson. He was a stockman before joining his father at their nursery at Newtown. He established his own seed and plant business. On 19 May 1857 he married Isabella Deane, with whom he had ten children; a second marriage, around 1875 to Sarah Jane Una Barnier, produced a further seven children. He joined the Volunteer Artillery in 1861, retiring a major in 1876. In 1874 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Nepean, but he retired in 1877.
