Joseph Newmark
Joseph Newmark (1799–1881) was a Prussian-American businessman in New York City and Los Angeles and a member of the Newmark family of Southern California. He helped found Jewish congregations in both cities and later became an ordained rabbi. After immigrating from Prussia to New York City, he was a co-founder there of B'nai Jeshurun (Manhattan), B'nai Jeshurun. He moved to the West Coast, briefly living and working in San Francisco. Newmark moved again to Los Angeles in 1854, where two nephews were already in business. He founded Congregation B'nai B'rith in 1862, which was originally an Orthodox synagogue. It later became Reform and is known as the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, the oldest synagogue in Los Angeles. Nowe Miasto Lubawskie (; german: Neumark in Westpreußen) is a town in northern Poland, situated on the River Drwęca. The total population in June 2018 was 11,062. Newmark Family Of Southern California
The Newmark family of Southern California engaged in commerce, land ownership and land development in Los Angeles County, California, during the 19th Century. Family members included: *Joseph Newmark (1799–1881), who was born in Neumark, West Prussia. He moved to New York in 1823 and there helped found B'nai Jeshurun. He lived in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1840 to 1845 and was president of a temple there. He, his wife, Rosa, and six children moved to Los Angeles, California in 1854, where, as a certified '' shochet'', he conducted religious services, weddings and funerals for the Jewish community until they could obtain a professional rabbi. In 1855 he founded the Hebrew Benefit Society, and in 1862 was the founding president of Congregation B'nai B'rith (today's Wilshire Boulevard Temple). Joseph Brandenstein
Joseph Brandenstein (1826–1910) was a German-born American businessman and philanthropist. Biography Brandenstein was born to a Jewish family in 1826 in Hümme, Germany. In 1850, he immigrated to California and settled in Placerville, California. He first tried his luck at mining for gold but failed. In 1852, he moved to San Francisco where he partnered with Joseph P. Newmark and founded a dry goods store. In 1854, Newmark moved to Los Angeles and Brandenstein then partnered with brothers Albert and Moses Rosenbaum and founded a wholesale leaf tobacco and cigar business.
