Joseph Gariépy
Joseph Hormidas Gariépy (December 3, 1852 – July 6, 1927) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Gariépy was born in L'Assomption County, Canada East on December 3, 1852. At age sixteen, he moved to Montreal where he lived for twenty-four years, working in the grocery business. He married Etudienne Boissoneault in 1872. The pair would have seven children; two of these, Wilfred and Charles, would enter politics themselves. In 1893 Joseph Gariépy moved to Edmonton bought a block of land for $1200 - the most expensive real estate traded in Edmonton to that date. On it, he opened a general store known successively as Gariépy & Chenier, Gariépy & Borsseau, and Gariépy & Lessard; a second store in Morinville followed in 1908. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. The 1900 municipal election was held December 10, 1900 for the purpose of electing a mayor and three aldermen to sit on the Edmonton Town Council, as well as five public school trustees and four separate school trustees. There were six aldermanic positions on the council at the time, but three of them were already filled. Robert Lee and Alfred Brown had both been elected for a two-year term in 1899, and were still in office. Colin Strang had also been elected for a two-year term, but had resigned; James Blowey had been appointed by council to fill his seat, and he was still in office. Prosper-Edmond Lessard
Prosper-Edmond Lessard (February 3, 1873 – April 11, 1931) was a Canadian businessman, militia officer and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1921 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 1925 to his death in 1931 sitting with the federal Liberal caucus. Early life Lessard was born on February 3, 1873 in Cranbourne, Quebec to Jean-Prosper Lessard and Annie Campbell Davidson. Lessard studied commerce and sciences at Collège du Mont-Saint-Louis in the mid-1890s and worked as a bookkeeper in Montreal following the completion of his studies. He left home seeking his fortune in the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, stopping in Edmonton on his way there and went on to become a leading citizen in the Franco-Albertan community. Morinville
Morinville is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada. It is approximately north of Edmonton along Highway 2. History Morinville was settled by Jean-Baptiste Morin, a priest and missionary of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who brought many French settlers in the late 1800s, followed by several German pioneers. The monument located in St. Jean Baptiste Park lists the many names of pioneers and settlers to Morinville. Once situated on the street at 100 Avenue and 100 Street, the monument was moved to its present location in 2000, as it was a safety hazard and very difficult to enjoy with all the traffic at the intersection. The first post-office opened in 1894. The Roman Catholic Church of the St. Jean Baptiste Parish was built in 1907. The church, along with its adjacent but now inoperative convent Morinville Convent, was declared a historical site in 1975.
