Joseph-Philias Morin
Joseph-Philias Morin (March 19, 1899 – January 13, 1945) was a politician in Quebec, Canada and a one-term Member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec (MLA). Early life He was born on March 19, 1899, in Saint-Maurice, Mauricie. He made his career in the construction business. Member of the legislature Morin served as a Councilmember in Cap-de-la-Madeleine from 1929 to 1933. Member of the legislature He won election as a Union Nationale candidate in the district of Champlain in the 1939 provincial election. He did not run for re-election in 1944, and was succeeded by Maurice Bellemare. Death He died on January 13, 1945, in Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. Champlain (provincial Electoral District)
Champlain is a provincial electoral riding in the Mauricie region of Quebec, Canada, which elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the eastern portions of the city of Trois-Rivières as well as Saint-Tite, Saint-Maurice and Sainte-Thècle. Its boundaries have remained the same since the 1973 election. However, the boundaries changed for the 2018 election as it gained Hérouxville, Lac-aux-Sables, Notre-Dame-de-Montauban, Saint-Adelphe, Sainte-Thècle, Saint-Séverin and Saint-Tite from Laviolette. It is named after the founder of Quebec City in 1608, Samuel de Champlain. Maurice Bellemare
Maurice Bellemare, (8 June 1912 – 15 June 1989) was a politician in Quebec, Canada. He was known as ''Le Vieux Lion de la Politique Québécoise'' (The Old Lion of Quebec Politics) because of his colourful style and his many years of public office. Bellemare was one of the last survivors of the Union Nationale party. Member of the legislature Born in Grand-Mère, Quebec, Bellemare served seven consecutive terms as Member of the Legislative Assembly for the district of Champlain in the Mauricie area. He was a member of the Union nationale and first was elected in the 1944 provincial election at the age of 32, when Maurice Duplessis was put back in office as Premier of Quebec. Gaining influence Bellemare served as the Deputy Government House Whip, from the 1948 provincial election to 1953, and as the Government House Whip, from 1953 to 1959. Union Nationale (Quebec)
The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959. The party was often referred to in English as the National Union, especially when it was still an electoral force, by both the media and, at times, the party. Saint-Maurice is a parish municipality in the Mauricie region of the province of Quebec in Canada. History The hagiotoponym refers to Saint Maurice. The territory of Saint-Maurice was colonized in the early 1830s when the place was still part of the Seigneurie of Saint-Maurice. The Catholic parish was founded in 1837 and detached from the Parish of Cap-de-la-Madeleine. The territory of the original parish was much larger than that which exists today, as it also included the Saint-Louis-de-France neighborhood in Trois-Rivières and a part of the current parish of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel. The parish municipality of Saint-Maurice was officially incorporated in 1855 during the original municipal division of Quebec. Mauricie () is a traditional and current administrative region of Quebec. La Mauricie National Park is contained within the region, making it a prime tourist location. The region has a land area of 35,860.05 km² (13,845.64 sq mi) and a population of 266,112 residents as of the 2016 Census. Its largest cities are Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan. The word ''Mauricie'' was coined by local priest and historian Albert Tessier and is based on the Saint-Maurice river which runs through the region on a North-South axis. Cap-de-la-Madeleine
Cap-de-la-Madeleine is a former Types of municipalities in Quebec, city in Quebec, Canada at the confluence of the Saint-Maurice River and the St. Lawrence River. 1939 Quebec General Election
The 1939 Quebec general election was held on October 25, 1939, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The Quebec Liberal Party, led by former premier Adélard Godbout, defeated the incumbent Union Nationale, led by Maurice Duplessis. This was Godbout's second non-consecutive term of office and his only victory out of four consecutive general elections opposing Duplessis. The Action libérale nationale, which had won 25 seats in the 1935 election and then merged with the Quebec Conservative Party, was re-formed by Paul Gouin, who had split with Duplessis soon after the formation of the Union Nationale. 1944 Quebec General Election
The 1944 Quebec general election was held on August 8, 1944 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The '' Union Nationale'', led by former premier Maurice Duplessis, defeated the incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Adélard Godbout. This was the first Quebec provincial election in which women were allowed to vote, having been granted suffrage at the provincial level in 1940 and at the federal level in 1919. This election marked Duplessis's comeback after having defeated Godbout in the 1936 election and having lost to him in the 1939 election. Unlike in the 1939 election, when the alcoholic Duplessis was clearly drunk at numerous campaign rallies, ''le chef'' had benefited from the time he had spent in an American sanatorium in 1942-43, where he had sobered up, and in the 1944 election, Duplessis refrained from drinking.
