Jones And Potts
Jones, Turner and Evans was a locomotive manufacturer in Newton-le-Willows, England from 1837, known as Jones and Potts between 1844 and 1852. Jones, Turner and Evans The company opened in 1837 with subcontracts from Edward Bury and Company, Edward Bury and Robert Stephenson and Company, Robert Stephenson. They provided locomotives for the North Union Railway and the Midland Counties Railway (MCR), the latter all 2-2-2 with diameter driving wheels, and cylinders. In 1840, they built two four-coupled 0-4-2s for the MCR. Further orders included engines for the Great Northern Railway (Great Britain), Great Northern Railway, London and Brighton Railway and the Grand Junction Railway. They also supplied six broad gauge engines for the Great Western Railway, the first of the class being ''Firefly''. In 1841 built four for the Eastern Counties Railway. The Vienna Technical Museum (german: Technisches Museum Wien) is located in Vienna (Austria), in the Penzing district, at Mariahilferstraße 212. The decision to establish a technical museum was made in 1908, and construction of the building started in 1909. On June 20, 1909, Emperor Franz Josef laid the foundation stone. Earlestown
Earlestown is a town and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in Merseyside, England. It forms the western part of the wider Newton-le-Willows urban area. At the 2011 Census the ward population was 10,830. History Earlestown is named after Sir Hardman Earle (11 July 1792 – 25 January 1877) a slave owner whose family was steeped in the slave trade. He was the Chairman of the London and North Western Railway. In July 1831, the Warrington and Newton Railway was opened, less than 6 months after the Liverpool and Manchester railway began service. Long Boiler Locomotive
The Long Boiler locomotive was the object of a patent by Robert Stephenson and the name became synonymous with the pattern. Its defining feature is that the firebox is placed ''behind'' the rearmost driving axle. This gives a long boiler barrel, with long fire-tubes. There is thus a generous heating surface area, giving a boiler that is both powerful and efficient. It is generally perceived that it arose out of attempts to match the power of broad gauge locomotives within the limitations of the standard gauge of Stephenson railways. Alexander Allan was a Scottish mechanical engineer. He was born at Montrose, Angus, in 1809 and died at Scarborough, Yorkshire on 2 June 1891. Biography Alan was born in Montrose, Angus, Scotland in 1809. He undertook a apprenticeship to Mr. Gibb, a millwright. In 1832 aged about 23 he took a position at Robert Stephenson and Company, Newcastle upon Tyne. By 1834 he had moved to Liverpool and taken up a position with George Forrester and Company who were about to begin building railway locomotives. Allan was works manager for George Forrester and Company until 1840. He was the engineer sent for a year to supervise the maintenance of the three Forrester engines ''Vauxhall'', ''Dublin'' and ''Kingstown'' for the first year of their service at Dublin and Kingstown Railway in 1834.
