John S. Armstrong
John S. Armstrong (November 18, 1850 – April 26, 1908) was an American real estate developer. He was the co-founder (along with Thomas Marsalis) of the former City of Oak Cliff (now incorporated into Dallas) and founder of the town of Highland Park, Texas, Highland Park, Texas. Armstrong was also a founder of the State Fair of Texas. John Scarborough Armstrong was born November 18, 1850 in Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee to J. W. and Pauline Armstrong. He was one of thirteen children. He married Alice J. White on July 3, 1878, in Lancaster, Kentucky, Lancaster, Kentucky. With his brothers, Dr. V. P. Armstrong and Henry C. Armstrong, he established the Armstrong Meat Packing Company, a wholesale grocery business. Thomas Marsalis
Thomas Lafayette Marsalis (October 4, 1852 – April 20, 1919) was an American developer. With John S. Armstrong, the founder of Oak Cliff, he was one of the key developers of what is now known as the Dallas area. Early life Marsalis was born in Amite County, Mississippi, near New Orleans, Louisiana. The Marsalis family were Dutch Reformed who had immigrated to North America in 1661. They had settled in New Jersey before Thomas Marsalis's grandfather moved to Mississippi. Marsalis spent his childhood in Louisiana. He moved to Corsicana, Texas, where Marsalis and a partner started a wholesale grocery house. In 1872 he moved to Dallas to start his own wholesale business. Oak Cliff
Oak Cliff is a neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, that was formerly a separate town in Dallas County; Dallas annexed Oak Cliff in 1901. It has since retained a distinct neighborhood identity as one of Dallas' older established neighborhoods. Oak Cliff has turn-of-the-20th century and mid-20th century housing, many parks, and is near the central business district of downtown Dallas. State Fair Of Texas
The State Fair of Texas is an annual state fair held in Dallas at historic Fair Park. The fair has taken place every year since 1886 except for varying periods during World War I and World War II as well as 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It usually begins the last Friday in September and ends 24 days later. The fair claims an annual attendance of over two million visitors through ticket scanning.
