John Pearson (cricketer)
John Henry Pearson (14 May 1915 – 13 May 2007) was an English first-class cricketer, who played three matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1934 to 1936. He also appeared for the Yorkshire Second XI between 1933 and 1936. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, Pearson was a right-handed batsman, who scored 54 runs with a best of 44 against Northamptonshire. He also appeared against Derbyshire and Kent. In all first-class matches he averaged 18.00. He did not bowl or take a catch in the field. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps.
