John Ellis (Australian Politician)
John McDonald Ellis (8 December 1872 – 2 July 1945) was an Australian politician. He was born in Bendigo to miner Thomas Ellis and Isabella McLean. He lived in Melbourne from around 1887, running a contracting firm with his brother. On 29 November 1899 he married Alice Rose Saunders, with whom he had three children. From 1926 to 1945 he served on Prahran City Council, and he was mayor from 1930 to 1932 and from 1944 to 1945. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1932 as the United Australia Party member for Prahran. Bendigo ( ) is a city in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. The City of Prahran was a local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1855 until 1994, when it was merged with the City of Malvern to create the City of Stonnington. History Prahran (/pɛ'ræn/) was incorporated as a municipal district on 24 April 1855, and became a borough on 1 October 1863, a town on 13 May 1870, and a city on 30 May 1879. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. Prahran is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It was created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. The electorate is the state’s smallest by area, covering a little under 11 km² in the inner south-east of Melbourne. It includes the suburbs of South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor, as well as parts of Balaclava, St Kilda, St Kilda East and Toorak (west of Orrong Rd). Arthur Jackson (Australian Politician)
Arthur Richard Jackson (7 December 1874 – 12 January 1957) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Stourbridge to wood pattern maker David Jackson and Sarah Dinah Hall. He came to Newcastle, New South Wales, at the age of twelve and worked in the coal mines. He travelled widely around Australia and New Zealand, and around 1895 married Ellen Andrews, with whom he had three children. He settled in Victoria around 1912 and managed a grocery store. He served on Prahran City Council from 1922 to 1924. In 1924 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Prahran. He left the Labor Party in 1932 after supporting the Premiers' Plan, and was defeated in the election of that year. He then became a draper at Colac, and was readmitted to the Labor Party, contesting Polwarth in 1940 and 1943 and Prahran in 1945. Bill Quirk (Australian Politician)
William Quirk (5 April 1891 – 16 November 1948) was an Australian politician. He was born in Burrumbeet to railway platelayer Michael Quirk and Catherine Houlihan. He attended state schools and worked for the railways from 1907 to 1914, then becoming a postal technician. On 19 June 1917 he married Harriette Julia Madden, with whom he had a daughter. He was an active member of the Postal Employees' Union, and served on the Labor Party state executive from 1944 to 1948. In 1945 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Prahran.
