John Picton Gorell Barnes, 5th Baron Gorell (born 29 July 1959), is a British Chartered Surveyor. In 1989 he married Rosanne Duncan – they have two children. He was educated at King's School, Bruton, Somerset, England. and at the Cornwall Technical College, Camborne, Cornwall, England. Barnes is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Weavers and is also a Freeman of the City of London. King's School, Bruton
King's Bruton is an independent fully co-educational secondary day and boarding school in the English public school tradition located in Bruton, Somerset, England. It was founded in 1519 by Richard FitzJames, and received royal foundation status around 30 years later in the reign of Edward VI. It is a member school of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. Girls have attended the school's sixth form since the 1960s before King's became fully co-educational in the late 1990s. Worshipful Company Of Weavers
The Worshipful Company of Weavers is the most ancient of the Livery Companies in the City of London. It existed in the year 1130, and was perhaps formed earlier. The company received a Royal Charter in 1155. At present, the Company retains a connection to textiles through its contributions to the textile industry. It has, however, like most other Livery Companies, evolved into a charitable institution rather than remaining a trade association. The Company ranks forty-second in the order of precedence of the Livery Companies. Its motto is ''Weave Truth With Trust''. Members of the Livery elect annually an Upper Bailiff who bears an ancient title unique to the Weavers' Company, and a Renter Bailiff. Freeman Of The City Of London
The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 as the status of a 'free man' or 'citizen', protected by the charter of the City of London and not under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord. In the Middle Ages, this developed into a freedom or right to trade, becoming closely linked to the medieval guilds, the livery companies. In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the City was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to the City. The freedom that citizens enjoy has long associations with privileges in the governance of the City. Whilst no longer carrying many substantive rights and largely existing as a tradition, the freedom is a pre-requisite for standing for election to the Common Council and Court of Aldermen of the City of London. Baron Gorell, of Brampton in the County of Derby, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 16 February 1909 for Sir Gorell Barnes, President of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division of the High Court of Justice from 1905 to 1909. His eldest son, the second Baron, was killed in the First World War and was succeeded by his younger brother, the third Baron. He notably served as Under-Secretary of State for Air between 1921 and 1922 in the coalition government of David Lloyd George. He was succeeded by his son, the fourth Baron.
