Johannes Oosthout
Johannes Oosthout (circa 1792 – 29 August 1821) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast, who served as acting commander of the Dutch Gold Coast between 2 January 1820 and his death on 29 August 1821. Biography Oosthout was born in The Hague to Petrus Balthazar Oosthout and Sophia Lange. He made a career in the colonial administration of the Dutch Gold Coast, and was mentioned as resident in the government instruction of 1 November 1819. After commander Frans Christiaan Eberhard Oldenburg died on 2 January 1820, Oosthout succeeded him as acting commander. Oosthout died in office, on 29 August 1821, of pleuritis. William I Of The Netherlands
William I (Willem Frederik, Prince of Orange-Nassau; 24 August 1772 – 12 December 1843) was a Prince of Orange, the King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. He was the son of the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, who went into exile to London in 1795 because of the Batavian Revolution. As compensation for the loss of all his father's possessions in the Low Countries, an agreement was concluded between France and Prussia in which William was appointed ruler of the newly created Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda in 1803; this was however short-lived and in 1806 he was deposed by Napoleon. Frans Christiaan Eberhard Oldenburg
Frans Christiaan Eberhard Oldenburg (circa 1777 – 2 January 1820) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast, who served as Commander of the Dutch Gold Coast between 2 May 1818 and his death on 2 January 1820. Biography Oldenburg was made second resident at the Coast of Guinea on 15 December 1807 and promoted to accountant general on 17 March 1810. On top of these duties, Oldenburg also became deputy commandant of Elmina on 15 August 1815. After Herman Willem Daendels arrived on the Gold Coast, his salary was raised and he was made provisional commandant of Elmina. After the death of Daendels on 2 May 1818, he succeeded him as acting governor-general. Due to a change in the regulations of administration of the colony, his title changed to commander on 1 November 1819. Oldenburg died in office, on 2 January 1820. Friedrich Last
Friedrich Franz Ludwich Ulrich Last (born 3 January 1786 – 7 May 1833) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast. Biography Friedrich Last was born in Rostock to Johann Christian Last and Catharina Maria Deichman. He was appointed assistant on the Dutch Gold Coast on 1 October 1815, as part of the new colonial administration under governor-general Herman Willem Daendels, and became bookkeeper and cashier on 10 April 1821. Last served as interim commander between 31 August 1821 and 14 February 1822. During his term in office, on 17 January 1822, Kwadwo Akyampon arrived in Elmina, who was sent by Asantehene Osei Tutu Kwame to establish an Asante residency in Elmina. The Dutch Gold Coast or Dutch Guinea, officially Dutch possessions on the Coast of Guinea (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Bezittingen ter Kuste van Guinea'') was a portion of contemporary Ghana that was gradually colonized by the Dutch, beginning in 1612. The Dutch began trading in the area around 1598, joining the Portuguese which had a trading post there since the late 1400s. Pleuritis
Pleurisy, also known as pleuritis, is inflammation of the membranes that surround the lungs and line the chest cavity (pleurae). This can result in a sharp chest pain while breathing. Occasionally the pain may be a constant dull ache. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, cough, fever, or weight loss, depending on the underlying cause. The most common cause is a viral infection. Other causes include bacterial infection, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, autoimmune disorders, lung cancer, following heart surgery, pancreatitis and asbestosis. Occasionally the cause remains unknown. The underlying mechanism involves the rubbing together of the pleurae instead of smooth gliding. Other conditions that can produce similar symptoms include pericarditis, heart attack, cholecystitis, pulmonary embolism, and pneumothorax. Dutch Cemetery, Elmina
The Dutch Cemetery of Elmina was constructed on the order of Governor of the Dutch Gold Coast Johannes Petrus Hoogenboom in 1806. Up until that date, the Dutch had buried their dead inside or just outside Elmina Castle, but by the beginning of the 19th century, little space was left there, so it was decided to construct a new cemetery in what was known as "the Garden" of Elmina. Ironically, Governor Hoogenboom was also one of the first people to be interred in the cemetery, after he was murdered by local Elminese people with whom he had a disagreement.
