Dutch Cemetery, Elmina
The Dutch Cemetery of Elmina was constructed on the order of Governor of the Dutch Gold Coast Johannes Petrus Hoogenboom in 1806. Up until that date, the Dutch had buried their dead inside or just outside Elmina Castle, but by the beginning of the 19th century, little space was left there, so it was decided to construct a new cemetery in what was known as "the Garden" of Elmina. Ironically, Governor Hoogenboom was also one of the first people to be interred in the cemetery, after he was murdered by local Elminese people with whom he had a disagreement. Overview In the middle of the cemetery, a large tomb is situated in which the most prominent people were buried, including governor-general Herman Willem Daendels, acting commander Johannes Oosthout, acting commander Eduard Daniel Leopold van Ingen, and governor Anthony van der Eb. Elmina
Elmina, also known as Edina by the local Fante people, Fante, is a town and the capital of the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District on the south coast of Ghana in the Central Region, Ghana, Central Region, situated on a bay on the Atlantic Ocean, west of Cape Coast. Dutch Gold Coast
The Dutch Gold Coast or Dutch Guinea, officially Dutch possessions on the Coast of Guinea (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Bezittingen ter Kuste van Guinea'') was a portion of contemporary Ghana that was gradually colonized by the Dutch, beginning in 1612. The Dutch began trading in the area around 1598, joining the Portuguese which had a trading post there since the late 1400s. Eventually, the Dutch Gold Coast became the most important Dutch colony in West Africa after Fort Elmina was captured from the Portuguese in 1637, but fell into disarray after the abolition of the slave trade in the early 19th century. Johannes Petrus Hoogenboom (circa 1778 – 4 August 1808) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast, who served as acting governor-general of the Dutch Gold Coast between 21 July 1807 and his death on 4 August 1808. Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle was erected by the Portugal, Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina (''St. George of the Mine Castle''), also known as ''Castelo da Mina'' or simply ''Mina'' (or ''Factory (trading post), Feitoria da Mina''), in present-day Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast (British Colony), Gold Coast). It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara. Herman Willem Daendels
Herman Willem Daendels (21 October 1762 – 2 May 1818) was a Dutch revolutionary, general and politician who served as the 36th Governor General of the Dutch East Indies between 1808 and 1811. Early life Born in Hattem, Netherlands, on 21 October 1762, Daendels was the son of Burchard Johan Daendels, the mayoral secretary, and Josina Christina Tulleken. He studied law at the University of Harderwijk, acquiring his doctorate on 10 April 1783. Political activity In 1785, he sided with the Patriots, who had seized power in several Dutch cities. In September 1786 he defended the city of Hattem against stadholderian troops. Johannes Oosthout
Johannes Oosthout (circa 1792 – 29 August 1821) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast, who served as acting commander of the Dutch Gold Coast between 2 January 1820 and his death on 29 August 1821. Biography Oosthout was born in The Hague to Petrus Balthazar Oosthout and Sophia Lange. He made a career in the colonial administration of the Dutch Gold Coast, and was mentioned as resident in the government instruction of 1 November 1819. After commander Frans Christiaan Eberhard Oldenburg died on 2 January 1820, Oosthout succeeded him as acting commander. Oosthout died in office, on 29 August 1821, of pleuritis. Eduard Daniel Leopold Van Ingen
Eduard Daniel Leopold baron van Ingen (born 22 June 1799 – 16 March 1833) was a Dutch colonial administrator on the Gold Coast. He was interim commander from 1832 until his death on 16 March 1833. Biography Eduard van Ingen was born in Zutphen to baron Antoni Lucas van Ingen, a captain in the Dutch army, and Elisabeth Louise Heckers. Eduard van Ingen was appointed assistant on the Dutch Gold Coast by royal decree of 8 July 1828. He was promoted to resident on 1 July 1829. Anthony Van Der Eb
Anthony van der Eb (born 3 January 1813 – 21 September 1852) was a Dutch civil servant, who made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast. Biography Van der Eb was born in Rotterdam on 3 January 1813 to Hendrik van der Eb and Marianne Jacoba Lessueur. On 5 October 1833, he was installed as assistant, with the military rank of second lieutenant, to the Dutch Gold Coast. After Acting Commander Hendrik Tonneboeijer died during the Dutch–Ahanta War, the young Van der Eb became Acting Commander himself between 1837 and 1838. When major general Jan Verveer visited the Gold Coast to avenge the Ahanta and to reform the government of the colony, he wrote the following about Van der Eb: Even though Verveer's report was not entirely positive, Van der Eb was installed as Governor of the Dutch Gold Coast by royal decree on 11 March 1840. Carel Hendrik Bartels
Carel Hendrik Bartels (29 September 1792 – 10 February 1850) was the wealthiest and most important Euro-African trader and businessman on the Dutch Gold Coast in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Apart from his entrepreneurial activities, Bartels was also a judge and member of the colonial government in Elmina, making him one of the most important men in town. Bartels has an entry in Hutchison's '' The Pen-Pictures of Modern Africans and African Celebrities''. The American historian Larry W. Yarak found an engraving based on a photograph of Bartels in 1995. Chief Kweku Andoh (March 1836 – 14 December 1898) was a military officer in the British army and Regent of Edina State (1873–1898). Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District is one of the twenty-two districts in Central Region, Ghana.
