Friedrich Last
Friedrich Franz Ludwich Ulrich Last (born 3 January 1786 – 7 May 1833) was a colonial administrator on the Gold Coast. Biography Friedrich Last was born in Rostock to Johann Christian Last and Catharina Maria Deichman. He was appointed assistant on the Dutch Gold Coast on 1 October 1815, as part of the new colonial administration under governor-general Herman Willem Daendels, and became bookkeeper and cashier on 10 April 1821. Last served as interim commander between 31 August 1821 and 14 February 1822. During his term in office, on 17 January 1822, Kwadwo Akyampon arrived in Elmina, who was sent by Asantehene Osei Tutu Kwame to establish an Asante residency in Elmina. The purpose of this mission was to secure the loyalty of Elmina and of the Dutch to the Asante Empire, which at the time embroiled in increasingly escalating tensions with the British. Osei Tutu Kwame
Osei Bonsu (born 1779 – 21 January 1824) also known as Osei Tutu Kwame was the Asantehene (King of the Ashanti). He reigned from 1804 to 1824. During his reign the Ashanti fought the Fante confederation and ended up dominating Gold Coast trade. In Akan, Bonsu means whale (the largest and most powerful "fish" in the sea), and is symbolic of his achievement of extending the Ashanti Empire to the coast. He died in Kumasi, and was succeeded by Osei Yaw Akoto. Other sources refer to him as Osei Tutu Kwame. He was a leader in war against the Fante of the southern Gold Coast in 1806–07 and against Gyaman in 1818–19. He also stood up against the British and fought them from looting gold and other resources from Ghana. Military Order Of William
The Military William Order, or often named Military Order of William (Dutch: , abbreviation: MWO), is the oldest and highest honour of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is named after St. William of Gellone (755–814), the first Prince of Orange. Its motto is (For Bravery, Leadership and Loyalty). The chivalric order was established on 30 April 1815 by King William I and was presented for feats of excellent bravery on the battlefield and as a meritorious decoration to senior military officers. Frans Friedrich Ludwig Ulrich Last (1 July 1822 – 10 March 1883) was a Dutch jurist who served as Attorney General ( Dutch: ''procureur-generaal'') at the Supreme Court of the Dutch East Indies. Biography Frans Last was born in Elmina to colonial administrator Friedrich Last and the Euro-African innkeeper Elisabeth Atteveld. He grew up in Kampen, where he lived with his stepmother Petronella Johanna Aleida van Vlierden. Frans Last gained a doctorate at the University of Groningen on 8 November 1845, and was on 31 December 1848 appointed official first class (Dutch: ''ambtenaar eerste klasse'') in the Dutch East Indies, and subsequently installed as court clerk (Dutch: ''griffier'') at the Circuit Court (Dutch: ''Rechtbank van Ommegang'') on Java. Gold Coast Euro-Africans
Gold Coast Euro-Africans were a historical demographic based in coastal urban settlements in colonial Ghana, that arose from unions between European men and African women from the late 15th century – the decade between 1471 and 1482, until the mid-20th century, circa 1957, when Ghana attained its independence. In this period, different geographic areas of the Gold Coast were politically controlled at various times by the Portuguese, Germans, Swedes, Danes, Dutch and the British. There are also records of merchants of other European nationalities such as the Spaniards, French, Italians and Irish, operating along the coast, in addition to American sailors and traders from New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. George Maclean
George Maclean (24 February 1801 – 22 May 1847) was Governor of Gold Coast, now in Ghana, from 1830 until 1844. Life Born in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, he was the son of the minister, Rev, James Maclean, and his wife Elizabeth Tod, daughter of George Tod of Elgin. In the period 1815–7 he was an ensign in the 27th Foot, and then in the 91st Foot. In poor health, he retired from the Army in 1821. Maclean was a member of the Royal African Colonial Corps, stationed in British West Africa from 1826 until 1828. In 1830 he became the Governor of Cape Coast, a position he retained until 1844. In 1842 he was investigated by Richard Robert Madden, following the 1839 discovery by activists that British merchants operated from the Gold Coast were supplying slaving vessels. Christiaan Lans
Christiaan Ernst Lans (born 12 September 1789 – 17 August 1843) was a soldier in the Royal Netherlands Army who by royal decree of 2 December 1832 was appointed Commander of the Dutch Gold Coast. He took office on 11 May 1833 and served until 1836, upon which he returned to the Netherlands. Lans was Commander of the Dutch Gold Coast when the ambitious George Maclean was Governor of the British Gold Coast. Lans tried to settle territorial disputes with the British in a peaceful manner. Belanda Hitam (from Indonesian meaning "Black Dutchmen", known in Javanese as ''Landa (Walanda) Ireng'') were a group of African (primarily Ashanti and other Akan peoples) recruits in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army during the colonial period.
