Johannes Emde
Johannes Emde (1774–1859) was a German evangelist who lived in Indonesia.Gerald H. Anderson (ed.). 1998. Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions. Grand Rapids Michigan: Eerdmans Publishing. hlm. 200. He became one of the founders of the churches in East Java. In Surabaya he was given the nickname of Saint Surabaya. Biography Johannes Emde was born in Schmillinghausen, near Arolsen, Germany in 1774 and died in Surabaya in 1859. In Indonesia, Emde lived in Surabaya, earning his living as a watchmaker, and married a Javanese woman from the Solo kraton. He was a Pietist, and was already living in Surabaya when he started preaching in about 1815. Emde did his missionary work by asking children to spread the Gospel of Mark as translated by Bruchner to literate people at the markets. Coenraad Laurens Coolen (1775 in Ungaran – 2 July 1873, in Mojokerto) is one of the lay evangelism, evangelists who did some of the first evangelical work in East Java.S.H. Soekotjo. 2009. Javanese Culture
Javanese culture is the culture of the Javanese people. Javanese culture is centered in the provinces of Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java in Indonesia. Madura
Madura Island is an Indonesian island off the northeastern coast of Java. A kyai ( ) is an expert in Islam, usually used among the ethnic Javanese people. Origins The word is of Javanese origin. Sometimes it is spelled kiai. Traditionally, students of Islam in Indonesia would study in a boarding school known as a pesantren. The leader of the school was called kyai, as a form of respect. The traditional word for a teacher in Islam is ustad, which is a Persian word. There are many ustads in Indonesia who teach the religion, but most of them do not have a boarding school. Education Kiai were educated in various pesantren: A student in a pesantren is called a santri. After the founding kyai of a pesantren dies, his son or another santri may take over the supervision of the school, and would then be called kyai.
