Johann Weißheimer II
Johann Weißheimer II was the father of the composer Wendelin Weißheimer. Around the middle of the 19th century, he was one of the most heavily taxed landowners in Rheinhessen. He was also a politician and mayor of Osthofen in the first chamber stalls of the Hesse state parliament during the 1848 revolution. His extensive diaries tell nearly 80 years of his life, documenting economic, political, social and climatic conditions. They are considered the most important primary sources about Osthofen and also of the Rhenish-Hessian history in the 19th century. Because of his extensive studies, he is also called the "chronicler" of Osthofen. Wendelin Weißheimer
Wendelin Weißheimer (26 February 1838 – 16 June 1910) was a German composer, conductor, essayist, teacher, and writer on music. He studied with Franz Liszt and was in close contact with Richard Wagner, Hans von Bülow, Peter Cornelius, Louise Otto-Peters, Ferdinand Lassalle, August Bebel and many other notable musicians of his time. He served as composer and conductor of choirs in Mainz, Darmstadt, Baden-Baden, Würzburg, Munich, Leipzig, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Szczecin, Strasbourg and at Milan's La Scala. Early life Origin, family and childhood The Weißheimer family resided in Westhofen in the 14th century. Wendelin's grandfather, Johann Weißheimer I, from Osthofen, inherited a stone mill from his mother's family at the end of the 18th century. Rheinhessen (wine Region)
Rheinhessen (in English often Rhine-Hesse or Rhenish Hesse) is the largest of 13 German wine regions (''Weinanbaugebiete'') for quality wines (''QbA'' and ''Prädikatswein'') with under cultivation in 2018. Named for the traditional region of Rhenish Hesse, it lies on the left bank of the Rhine between Worms and Bingen in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Despite its historic name it is currently no longer part of the federal-state of Hesse, this being the case since the end of World War II. There have been several unsuccessful attempts to legally reunite the former wine growing districts of Mainz on the Hessian side during the post-war area. Osthofen
Osthofen () is a town in the middle of the Wonnegau in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Since 1 July 2014 it is part of the ''Verbandsgemeinde'' (a kind of collective municipality) Wonnegau. Osthofen was raised to town on 24 October 1970. Geography Location The town lies in Rhenish Hesse where the river Seebach, a very short river that rises in neighbouring Westhofen and flows for only 9 km, empties into the Rhine. Richard Wagner
