Johann Brandl
Johann Brandl (30 October 1835 – 9 June 1913) was an Austrian composer and conductor of theatre orchestras, for many years conductor at the Carltheater in Vienna. Life Brandl was born in 1835 in Kirchenbirk in Bohemia (now , near Březová (Sokolov District), Březová in Sokolov district), son of a tobacconist and master carpenter. He came to Vienna in 1853, where he studied with Jakob Dont and took a bandmaster course with Andreas Leonhardt. Carltheater
The Carltheater was a theatre in Vienna. It was in the suburbs in Leopoldstadt at Praterstraße 31 (at that time called Jägerzeile). It was the successor to the Leopoldstädter Theater. After a series of financial difficulties, that theater had been sold in 1838 to the director, Carl Carl, who continued to run it in parallel to his Theater an der Wien until 1845. Two years later, the building was partially demolished and rebuilt following the plans of architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, who would later design the Vienna State Opera. The theatre was opened under the name ''Carltheater'' in the same year, 1847. Many pieces by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy premiered here; between 1854 and 1860, Nestroy was the director of the theatre. The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. It was founded in 1788 and is the oldest still performing theater in Vienna. It is often referred to colloquially as simply ''Die Josefstadt''. Following remodeling and rebuilding in 1822 — celebrated by the performance of the overture '' Die Weihe des Hauses'' ('Consecration of the House') by Beethoven — opera was staged there including Meyerbeer and Wagner. Antonie Schläger
Antonie Schläger (4 May 1859 – 29 August 1910) was an Austrian operatic soprano and mezzo-soprano, taking leading roles in Vienna at the Carltheater and at the Court Opera. Life Schläger (originally Lautenschläger) was born in the Simmering district of Vienna in 1859, daughter of a grocer. She first worked in a type foundry; from the age of 17 she sang in the chorus of the Carltheater in Vienna. She took singing lessons with Johann Brandl, conductor of the theatre orchestra, and in 1879 played her first role in the Carltheater, as a ship cadet in Charles Lecocq's operetta '' Les cent vierges''. Nathaniel Meyer von Rothschild (26 October 1836 – 16 June 1905) was a member of the Rothschild banking family of Austria, known as art collector and patron. Life Born in Vienna, he was the fifth child and first son of Anselm von Rothschild (1803–1874) and his wife Charlotte von Rothschild (1807–1859). His grandfather Salomon Mayer von Rothschild (1774–1855), a native from Frankfurt, had founded the Viennese S M von Rothschild banking house in 1820, continued as the Creditanstalt by his father. Johann Strauss II
Johann Baptist Strauss II (25 October 1825 – 3 June 1899), also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger or the Son (german: links=no, Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. Franz von Suppé (né Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppe) (18 April 181921 May 1895) was an Austrian composer of light operas and other theatre music. He came from the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now part of Croatia). A composer and conductor of the Romantic period, he is notable for his four dozen operettas. Life and education Franz von Suppé's parents named him Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo when he was born on 18 April 1819 in Spalato, now Split, Dalmatia, Austrian Empire. His father was a civil servant in the service of the Austrian Empire, as was his father before him; Suppé's mother was Viennese by birth. Erich Schenk
Erich Schenk (5 May 1902 – 11 October 1974) was an Austrian musicologist and Music history, music historian. Personal and scientific life Born in Salzburg (Austria-Hungary), Schenk studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and then at the University of Munich, where he also received his doctorate in 1925. His habilitation followed in 1930 at the University of Rostock, and four years later he founded the Musicological Institute at that institution in 1934. He remained director of Musicological Institute through 1940. After the retirement of Robert Lach in 1940, Schenk followed him as full professor at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Vienna. He was able to hold on even after the end of the National Socialist regime and was accepted into the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1946.
