Theater In Der Josefstadt
The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. It was founded in 1788 and is the oldest still performing theater in Vienna. It is often referred to colloquially as simply ''Die Josefstadt''. Following remodeling and rebuilding in 1822 — celebrated by the performance of the overture '' Die Weihe des Hauses'' ('Consecration of the House') by Beethoven — opera was staged there including Meyerbeer and Wagner. From 1858 onwards the theatre gave up opera and instead concentrated on straight theatre and comedy. Pepita De Oliva
Josefa Durán y Ortega (1830–1872), known by the stage name Pepita de Oliva, was a Romani Spanish dancer who performed across Europe, popularizing Spanish flamenco dancing and costumes. Despite her official marriage with her dance teacher Juan Antonio Gabriel de la Oliva in 1851, the following year she established a partnership with the British diplomat Lionel Sackville-West with whom she had five children. Her daughter Victoria gave birth to the English writer Vita Sackville-West, who in 1937 published a biography of her grandmother titled ''Pepita''. Otto Schenk
Otto Schenk (born 12 June 1930, in Vienna) is an Austrian actor, and theater and opera director. Life and career Schenk was born to Catholic parents. His father, a lawyer, had Jewish roots and therefore lost his job after the Anschluss in 1938. His mother was Italian. Schenk studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, and started his acting career at the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Wiener Volkstheater, and as a comedian at Vienna's Kabarett Simpl. His directing career began in 1953 at small Viennese venues, later leading him to renowned stages like the Burgtheater, the Munich Kammerspiele or the Salzburg Festival, staging plays by William Shakespeare, Arthur Schnitzler, Ödön von Horváth, Anton Chekhov. Ernst Lothar (; 25 October 1890 – 30 October 1974) was a Moravian-Austrian writer, theatre director/manager and producer. He was born Ernst Lothar Müller, and as Müller is a very common German surname, he dropped it. His brother, Hans Müller-Einigen, by contrast, added a surname. Biography Lothar was born in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno in the Czech Republic) and died in Vienna. Amongst his novels was ''The Angel with the Trumpet'' and ''The Prisoner''. In 1943 he published ''Beneath Another Sun'' (Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc., Garden City, N.Y.). It was evidently written in exile as the foreword is signed Colorado Springs, Summer, 1942. Otto Ludwig Preminger ( , ; 5 December 1905 – 23 April 1986) was an Austrian-American theatre and film director, film producer, and actor. He directed more than 35 feature films in a five-decade career after leaving the theatre. Max Reinhardt (; born Maximilian Goldmann; 9 September 1873 – 30 October 1943) was an Austrian-born theatre and film director, intendant, and theatrical producer. With his innovative stage productions, he is regarded as one of the most prominent directors of German-language theatre in the early 20th century. Franz Pokorny
Franz Pokorny (22 December 1797 – 5 August 1850) was an Austrian theatre manager. He owned two leading theatres in Vienna, the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Theater an der Wien, where he staged notable productions. Life Early career Pokorny was born in (now in the Czech Republic), son of a teacher. He was initially a school assistant. Carl Carl
Karl Andreas Bernbrunn (1787–1854), known by the stage name Carl Carl, was a Kraków-born actor and theatre director. Bernbrunn was born illegitimately to Maria Anna Alxinger and Karl Andrä Bernbrunn. Maria Anna was the wife of the poet (1755–1797), and daughter of army supplier Abraham Wetzlar, who converted to Catholicism in 1776. Bernbrunn became an actor in Munich with Carl Weinmüller. In 1822 Bernbrunn became the director of the in Munich, and in 1826 became the director of the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. In 1838 he bought the Theater in der Leopoldstadt which he ran in parallel to the Theater an der Wien until 1845. Josef Jarno
Josef Jarno (born 24 August 1866 in Pest, died 11 January 1932 in Vienna) was an Austrian actor and theatre director. He was the older brother of opera composer Georg Jarno. Life Jarno made his debut in the ''Lehártheater'' in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria. He visited the place every summer for the following 14 years. In 1897 a summer theatre was initiated in Bad Aussee, with Jarno as its first director.
