Joe Citro
Joseph A. Citro is a Vermont author and folklorist who has extensively researched and documented the folklore, hauntings, ghost stories, paranormal activity and occult happenings of New England. Early life and education Citro was born in Rutland, Vermont. He grew up in Chester, Vermont, lived in Underhill, Vermont, and lives in Windsor, Vermont. His father was a machinist and storyteller, telling tales of the people and natural world of Vermont, and his mother encouraged his love of reading. As a child he wrote short stories and comic books. He graduated from Keene State College with a BA in English in 1971. He worked for the state's Department of Education and the Department of Human Service until 1983 designing vocational educational programs for people with developmental disabilities. Guardian Angels (novel)
The Guardian Angels is a non-profit international volunteer organization with the goal of unarmed crime prevention. The Guardian Angels organization was founded on February 13, 1979, in New York City by Curtis Sliwa. Since then, it has expanded to more than 130 cities and 13 countries worldwide. Sliwa originally created the Guardian Angels to combat widespread violence and crime on the New York City Subway system. The organization originally trained members to make citizen's arrests for violent crimes. They patrolled streets and neighborhoods without involving police or any outside authority, but also provided educational programs for schools and businesses. The Vermont Ghost Guide
''The Vermont Ghost Guide'' is a comprehensive paranormal travel guide published in 2000 that documents all of the major hauntings and ghost-sightings in Vermont, inspired by the numerous Vermont wildlife and destination guides. The book was researched and written by Vermont folklore expert Joe Citro and illustrated by horror artist and fellow Vermonter Steve Bissette. The book is divided into sections, each devoted to a single region of Vermont and its supposed undead residents. Like his other non-fiction books, Citro does not speculate on whether or not the paranormal occurrences he describes are in fact true, but instead leaves that job entirely to the reader. However, as a joke, Citro did insert one account that was a complete fabrication, although he has never revealed which one that may be. ''Deus-X'' is a 1994 horror novel written by Joe Citro. Of all his novels, Citro has repeatedly described it as being his darkest and most intricate. The idea for the book came from Citro's love for and fascination with the occult and paranormal. After researching and documenting countless ghost stories, UFO sightings, and general accounts of strange activity, Citro was struck by how interesting it would be if all these various phenomena were linked somehow. Further inspiration came from the Firesign Theatre album, "Everything You Know is Wrong." Citro found himself chilled by those words and sought to write a story which exposed everything we thought to be true as devious manipulations. The Middlebury Bread Loaf Writers' Conference is an author's conference held every summer at the Bread Loaf Inn, near Bread Loaf Mountain, east of Middlebury, Vermont.
