Joanna Stephens
Joanna Stephens or Mrs. Stephens (? – 6 August 1774) was a British inventor of a medicine for bladder stones. After proving its efficacy she was paid £5,000 for revealing the recipe by the UK parliament. Her remedy was used and analysed in England and in France. Investigations inspired by her work may have been a basis for development of modern biochemistry. Life Stephens (possibly born in 1710) was the granddaughter of a doctor who authored several publications on remedies and grew up in a wealthy family in Berkshire. In her youth, she took care of herself by concocting remedies that she distributed free of charge to people in straitened circumstances. After the painful death of a close friend from Kidney stone disease, kidney stones, she particularly devoted herself to the remedies for the condition. David Hartley (philosopher)
David Hartley (; baptized 21 June 1705 Old Style; died 28 August 1757) was an English philosopher and founder of the Associationist school of psychology. Early life and family history David Hartley was born in 1705 in the vicinity of Halifax, Yorkshire. His mother died three months after his birth. His father, an Anglican clergyman, died when David was fifteen. Hartley was educated at Bradford Grammar School and in 1722 was admitted as a Sizar to Jesus College, Cambridge. He received his BA in 1726 and MA in 1729. In April 1730 he became the first layperson to be Master of Magnus Grammar School ( Magnus Church of England Academy), Newark, and it was there that he began to practice medicine. Antoine Baumé
Antoine Baumé (26 February 172815 October 1804) was a French chemist. Life He was born at Senlis. He was apprenticed to the chemist Claude Joseph Geoffroy, and in 1752 was admitted a member of the École de Pharmacie, where in the same year he was appointed professor of chemistry. The money he made in a business he carried on in Paris for dealing in chemical products enabled him to retire in 1780 in order to devote himself to applied chemistry, but, ruined in the Revolution, he was obliged to return to a commercial career. He devised many improvements in technical processes, e.g. for bleaching silk, dyeing, gilding, purifying saltpetre, etc., but he is best known as the inventor of the Baumé scale hydrometer or "spindle" which provides scientific measurements for the density of liquids.
