Jessica Scarcella-Spanton is an American politician serving as a member of the New York State Senate for the 23rd district. Her district encompasses most of the North Shore of Staten Island, alongside parts of some southern Brooklyn neighborhoods. Early life and education Scarcella-Spanton was born and raised in Staten Island. Both her parents were schoolteachers, and her father was a leader of the local chapter of the United Federation of Teachers. She attended the College of Staten Island from 2007 to 2011, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. Career Scarcella-Spanton's involvement in politics began in 2009, when she was an intern for Janele Hyer-Spencer. New York's 23rd State Senate district is one of 63 districts in the New York State Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Jessica Scarcella-Spanton since 2023. Spanton has been an active member in New York politics and was a campaign manager for her predecessor Diane Savino, who represented the district from 2005 until her retirement in 2022. Janele Hyer-Spencer
Donna Janele Hyer-Spencer (born October 24, 1964) is an American attorney and former politician. Hyer-Spencer represented New York's 60th Assembly District, which covers parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn, from 2007 to 2010. She is a Democrat. Early life and education Hyer-Spencer attended high school in Lake Zurich, Illinois, where she ran track and cross country and played golf. Hyer-Spencer earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia College Chicago. She played basketball in college.
