Jefferson Theater (Virginia)
The Jefferson Theater, a former movie palace, is a performing arts venue located at 110 East Main Street in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is the centerpiece of the Historic Downtown Mall. Built in 1912, this combination vaudeville house/movie theatre, cinema is one of the major performing venues in Charlottesville, Virginia. Operated most recently as one of the dollar theaters, it is currently owned by Coran Capshaw, who oversaw restoration which has now been completed. It was designed by architect C.K. Howell, who also designed the November Theatre in nearby Richmond, Virginia. Before closing for renovations in the spring of 2006, one of the final performances was a concert by the Charlottesville-based bluegrass band, King Wilkie. Coran Capshaw
Robert Coran Capshaw is an American music industry executive and entrepreneur. He is the manager of Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Lady A, Trey Anastasio and Chris Stapleton among others. Capshaw founded Red Light Management and co-founded ATO Records. He is also a real estate developer. Biography Capshaw got his start as a music manager in the early 1990s when he was the owner of a bar in Charlottesville, VA called "Trax". In 1992, he gave the Dave Matthews Band their first weekly gig (which lasted from 1992 to 1993). From there, he began managing Dave Matthews Band and helped launch their career, bringing them from local bar band to international fame. Capshaw has won the Pollstar Magazine's "Manager of the Year" award five times in 1998, 2003, 2010, 2018 and 2019. Movie Palace
A movie palace (or picture palace in the United Kingdom) is any of the large, elaborately decorated movie theaters built between the 1910s and the 1940s. The late 1920s saw the peak of the movie palace, with hundreds opening every year between 1925 and 1930. With the advent of television, movie attendance dropped, while the rising popularity of large Multiplex (movie theater), multiplex chains signaled the obsolescence of single-screen theaters. Dollar Theaters
Discount theaters, also known as dollar theaters, dollar movies, second-run theaters, and sub-run theaters, are movie theaters that show motion pictures for reduced prices after those films depart first-run theaters. Originally, they would receive release prints of 35 mm films after those prints had been shown already at first-run theaters. Therefore, the film's quality was significantly lower because the release print was worn out from dozens of showings, and the potential audience for the film would be smaller since it had been already released weeks or months before (meaning that most people who wanted to see the film would already have done so at a first-run theater). King Wilkie
King Wilkie is an American music group formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2002 by Reid Burgess and Ted Pitney. While their early sound was commonly filed under bluegrass, the group has continually defied expectations, drawing from other influences, such as folk and Americana music. They have released three albums.
