Jeannette Miller (writer)
Jeannette Miller - Jeannette de los Ángeles Miller Rivas - (b. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on 2 August 1944) is a writer, poet, narrator essayist and art historian of Dominican art. She was awarded the National Literature prize from her country in 2011. Biography Miller was the daughter of writer Fredy Miller and Rosa Rivas. Her father's own role as a writer influenced her from an early age, although was a was assassinated by the Rafael Trujillo, Trujillo regime on 5 May 1959. She completed her primary education at Colegio María Auxiliadora and her high school education at Colegio Apostolado de Santo Domingo. She earned her BA in Literature at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, where she later taught. She also taught at the Universidad Central del Este, the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Seminario Arquidiocesano Santo Tomás de Aquino and at the Centro Bonó. Gilberto Hernández Ortega
Gilberto Hernández Ortega (21 December 1923 – 23 October 1979) was an artist from the Dominican Republic. He is considered a leading painting, painter of his generation. Early life and education He was born in Baní, Peravia Province, in 1923 but was raised in Santo Domingo. He was great-grandson of Pierre André Frier, a Frenchman. Ortega first studied art under Celeste Woss y Gil at her private academy. Undecided about his career, he studied engineering for more than two years before committing to pursuing painting. He enrolled in the National School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Woss y Gil once again, as well as Josep Gausachs and George Hausdorf. Ortega was particularly influenced by Gausachs, maintaining a close relationship with the older artist until Gausachs's death in 1959. Noemí Ruiz is a Puerto Rican painter, graphic artist and teacher. She is said to be a pioneer of abstraction in Puerto Rico. Her works can be found in many significant collections, and she has represented Puerto Rico in many international exhibitions. Education Noemí Ruiz studied at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in San Germán, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Education and Arts Administration degree in 1953. Fernando Peña Defilló ( Santo Domingo, 1926 – Jarabacoa, 18 May 2016) was an artist from the Dominican Republic. Biography Peña Defilló was born in 1926 in Santo Domingo into a white family of Spanish ancestry (by his father, he had colonial Canarian heritage, and by his mother, Catalan descent). His father, Manuel Arturo Peña Batlle (1902–1954), was a lawyer, historian and diplomat who served as President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic (1942–1943) and as Minister of Foreign Affairs (1943–1946); his mother was Carmelita Defilló Sanz, a cousin of Catalan musician Pau Casals Defilló.
