Jan Van De Velde The Elder
Jan van de Velde the Elder (1568, Antwerp – 1623, Haarlem), was a Dutch calligrapher, writing teacher, and engraver. He was the father of the engraver Jan van de Velde. Biography According to the RKD he was possibly the pupil of Felix van Sambix. He married Mayken van Bracht from Turnhout, sister-in-law of the publisher Jan van Waesberghe, in 1592 in Rotterdam and opened a French school there.Jan van de Velde (I) in the Their son, , became a painter. Haarlem (; predecessor of ''Harlem'' in English) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. Jan Van De Velde
Jan van de Velde the younger (1593 – ca. 1 November 1641) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver of animal, landscape and still-life subjects. He was the son of Jan van de Velde the Elder and the father of the still life painter Jan Jansz van de Velde. Biography Van de Velde was born in either Delft or Rotterdam, to calligrapher Jan van de Velde the Elder from Antwerp and Maijcken Van Bracht from Turnhout. He was apprenticed to engraver Jacob Matham in 1613, entered the Haarlem guild in 1614, and then probably visited Italy. He is better known for his etching and engraving than for his painting. According to Houbraken, he was the brother of Esaias van de Velde and Willem van de Velde the Elder, but according to John Denison Champlin, Esaias was his cousin, and he was no relation at all to the family of Willem. Felix Van Sambix
Felix van Sambix (Antwerp, c. 1553 – Delft, 1642) was a Netherlandish schoolmaster and calligrapher. During his lifetime, he was considered one of the finest writers of the Dutch Republic. Van Sambix was born in Flemish trading city Antwerp. Being a teacher at a French school, in 1571 he joined the St. Ambrose guild for teachers. His earliest known calligraphic work dates from 1585. Called a ‘kapitaalvoorletterboek’, the publication contained printed capitals and handwritten writing specimens. Like many others, Van Sambix fled the Southern Netherlands after the Fall of Antwerp. He moved to Delft, where he would live and work from 1586 until his death. On January 3, 1590, Van Sambix participated in the writing competition for the crowned pen (the ‘Plume Couronnée’). Jean de la Chambre (1605, Haarlem – 1668, Haarlem) was an engraver and calligrapher in the Dutch Golden Age, best known today for his portrait by Frans Hals, which is in the collection of the National Gallery in London. Nicolaes Boddingius, Nicolaas Bodding van Laer or Bodding van Laer (2 August 1605 (baptised) – 1669) was a schoolmaster, writer and minister active in Haarlem in the Netherlands. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the fifth child of Jacob Claesz Bodding and Magdalena Heyns.
