James William Hindle
James William Hindle (also known as Jimmy Hindle) is a British singer-songwriter from Yorkshire. He released three albums in the 2000s on Badman Records before re-emerging in the 2010s as a member of Glasgow-based indie rock bands The Pooches and US Highball. Early life Hindle was born in Yorkshire and his early musical projects involved playing gigs in Leeds in various bands, including a punk band called Coping Saw. After moving to London, Hindle's cover of John Denver's song "Whispering Jesse" was heard by producer and head of Badman Records Dylan Magierek, who included it on the Denver tribute album ''Take Me Home'' (2000). Badman Records (2001–2005) Hindle recorded his self-titled first album for Badman Records in 2001. Featuring American Music Club drummer Tim Mooney and former Tarnation singer Paula Frazer, the album drew comparisons to Nick Drake and included a cover of the Bee Gees' I Started a Joke. The Ladybug Transistor is a Brooklyn-based indie pop group associated with The Elephant Six Collective. History Started in 1995 by Gary Olson, Edward Powers and Javier Villegas, The Ladybug Transistor released '' Marlborough Farms'' the same year on Park N' Ride records, adding and subtracting a couple of members and going on an international tour. ''Comes with a Smile'' was a quarterly music-focused fanzine published in the United Kingdom between June 1997 and February 2006. The title originates from a lyric in Red House Painters' song "24". Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1996. Led by Stuart Murdoch, the band has released eleven albums. They are often compared with acts such as The Smiths and Nick Drake. The name "Belle and Sebastian" comes from '' Belle et Sébastien'', a 1965 children's book by French writer Cécile Aubry later adapted for television. Lame-O Records is an independent record label based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by Eric Osman to release Modern Baseball's ''Sports'', the label has been hailed as one of Philadelphia's best indie labels. History Lame-O Records was founded in 2012 by Eric Osman, manager of the band Modern Baseball, to release the band's debut LP ''Sports''. Osman funded the 300-copy pressing with savings earned working at coffee shops. Though ''Sports'' earned the label no profit, it quickly sold out and has subsequently been repressed four times. The label was not originally supposed to continue beyond ''Sports'', but Osman decided to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the success of the first album. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Nic Jones (born Nicolas Paul Jones; 9 January 1947) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Regarded as a prominent figure of the British folk revival, he has recorded five solo albums and collaborated with various musicians. Biography Nic Jones was born on 9 January 1947 in Orpington, London, England, where his father owned a newsagent's shop. The family moved to Brentwood in Essex when he was two, and he later attended Brentwood School. He first learned to play guitar as a young teenager and early musical influences included such artists as The Shadows, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery and Ray Charles. His interest in folk music was aroused by an old school friend, Nigel Paterson who was a member of a folk band called The Halliard. ''Folk Songs II'' is an album by the Big Eyes Family Players & Friends, released in 2012 on Static Caravan Recordings. It is the follow-up to the 2009 album '' Folk Songs'' by James Yorkston and the Big Eyes Family Players. Background Following the success of the first ''Folk Songs'' album and tour, and at a loss for what to do next, Yorkston suggested to the Big Eyes Family Players leader James Green that he make a sequel. Green then invited some of his favourite singers to choose songs and he would provide the music. A limited edition version of the album features a bonus CD entitled ''The Meersbrook Manor Sessions'', which contains three additional tracks. Critical reception The album received positive reviews from the music press. Writing in The Guardian, Robin Denselow commented on the "even more adventurous, often sprawling arrangements", compared to the first album, and called it "A strange, compelling set." The Big Eyes Family Players / Big Eyes Family are a group from Sheffield, UK, formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalist James Green. They initially recorded experimental music under the name Big Eyes, but in 2006 they changed their name and began to venture more into folk and traditional music.
