Jack Pierce (oilman)
John Michael "Jack" Pierce (22 February 1924 – 8 June 1991) was a Canadian oilman. Pierce was the president and chairman of Ranger Oil Limited, an oil and gas company based in Calgary, Alberta. He is best known for co-leading the 1974 discovery of the 1.2 billion barrel Ninian Oil Field in the North Sea. The Pierce Field, located in blocks 23/22a and 23/27a of the North Sea, is named in his honour. Biography John Michael Pierce was born in Westmount, Quebec on 22 February 1924 to Ashkenazi Jewish parents Richard Moses Pierce (1880 – 1947) and Flora Elizabeth Asch (1891 – 1975). Richard Pierce was born in Kaltinėnai, Lithuania, and immigrated with his family to Winnipeg, Manitoba. During World War I, he served at the rank of Captain with the 106th Regiment, Winnipeg Light Infantry as a rifle instructor. After the War, Richard settled in Montreal and ran the Pierce Fur Company. Mewata Armoury (also referred to as Mewata Armouries) is a Canadian Forces reserve armoury in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. ''Mewata'' ( is derived from the Cree word (), meaning "Oh, be joyful". The building was built between 1915 and 1918 for an original cost of CA$282,051 (). The building was designed by Thomas W. Fuller (Department of Public Works Architect) and the project was supervised locally by Calgary architect Leo Dowler. The structure was actually built by A. G. The Glencoe Club is a private sports and social club located in southwest Calgary, Alberta, Canada founded in 1931. Its facilities include two swimming pools, six badminton courts, ten bowling lanes, eight curling sheets, a skating rink, seven squash courts, six indoor tennis courts, and a fitness facility. The Calgary Highlanders is a Canadian Army Primary Reserve infantry regiment, headquartered at Mewata Armouries in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The regiment is a part-time reserve unit, under the command of 41 Canadian Brigade Group, itself part of 3rd Canadian Division, one of four region-based Canadian Army divisions. The regiment is one of only two regiments in the Canadian Forces (with The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's)) to wear an honorary distinction on their uniform, commemorating the counterattack at Kitcheners' Wood.
