Jack Froggatt
Jack Froggatt (17 November 1922 – 17 February 1993) was an English footballer. Career Coming from a footballing family, Froggatt started his football career in 1945, whilst in the RAF. Froggatt's uncle, Frank and cousin, Redfern Froggatt both played for Sheffield Wednesday, with the latter racking up 434 games for The Owls. Previously working in his father's butcher shop, the Sheffield-born winger signed for Portsmouth as a centre-half but managed to persuade manager Jack Tinn to play him as an outside-left. Froggatt crowned his Pompey debut in 1945 with a second-half goal at The Dell in a War League South match with South Coast derby rivals Southampton and went on to become a regular goalscorer. He had alarming speed, excellent ball control and was very strong in the air, making him one of the most versatile players Pompey have ever had. Cap (sport)
In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. Hat-trick
A hat-trick or hat trick is the achievement of a generally positive feat three times in a match, or another achievement based on the number three. Origin The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1865 in the ''Chelmsford Chronicle''. The term was eventually adopted by many other sports including hockey, association football, Formula 1 racing, rugby, and water polo. Rockingham Road
Rockingham Road was a football stadium in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. It was home to Kettering Town F.C. from 1897 until 2011. At the time of its closure, the ground had a capacity of 6,264, of which 1,800 was seated. In September 2017, the land was sold by the owner, Ben Pickering Limited. The site was first identified as a potential site for housing in 2005 by the local authority, and press reports indicated that the new owner was likely to use the land for a housing development. During November 2017, the entire stadium and associated structures were demolished and the site cleared for redevelopment. Duggie Reid
John Douglas Jamieson Reid (3 October 1917 – 8 February 2002) was a Scottish footballer. An inside forward, he played for Stockport County and Portsmouth. Born in West Kilbride, Reid started his working life as an apprentice plumber in Manchester. After a spell in amateur football, he joined Stockport County, and turned professional in 1936. Playing at wing-half, Reid was part of the team that won Division Three North. In 1946, at the age of 28, he was sold to Portsmouth for £7,000. Although Portsmouth fans were initially sceptical, he won them over by scoring 29 goals in his first season, ending it as the club's top scorer. Known for his blistering shots, his nickname; 'thunderboots' was re-affirmed when, at Fratton Park he put the ball through the net and into the crowd when scoring a penalty against Manchester City. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. James William Dickinson Order of the British Empire, MBE (25 April 1925 – 8 November 1982) was an English association football, footballer who played as a wing half, left half. Dickinson holds the record for number of league appearances for Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth (764). Only Swindon Town F.C., Swindon Town's John Trollope (footballer), John Trollope (770) has made more appearances for a single club. He signed for Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth as a trainee and made his debut in 1946 against Blackburn Rovers F.C., Blackburn Rovers. Jimmy Scoular
James Scoular (11 January 1925 – 19 March 1998) was a Scottish football player and manager. Known as a tough, combative player with precise passing skills, Scoular made over 600 appearances in the Football League with Portsmouth, Newcastle United and Bradford Park Avenue, as a player-manager, and attained nine caps for Scotland in a playing career spanning nearly twenty years. Following his retirement from playing, Scoular went on to manage Cardiff City and Newport County. Early life Born in Livingston Station, West Lothian, Scoular's father Alec was also a footballer prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, playing for Alloa Athletic, Stenhousemuir and Leith Athletic.
