Incremental Radio (IBA)
Incremental Radio was a new type of radio licence given out by the IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) in the United Kingdom between 1989 and 1990. In essence, these were additional radio services introduced into areas already served by an ILR (Independent Local Radio) station. The new stations had to offer output not already available on ILR, such as specialist music or unique programmes for a specific section of the community, which meant radio stations covering a niche interest (e.g. Jazz music) could legally get on AM/ FM. Pirates could apply as long as they closed by the end of the year. Long established pirate stations, such as Kiss FM, had closed down by 1 January 1989 in the hope of winning a licence. Independent Broadcasting Authority
The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) was the regulatory body in the United Kingdom for commercial television (ITV and Channel 4 and limited satellite television regulation – cable television was the responsibility of the Cable Authority) – and commercial and independent radio broadcasts. The IBA came into being when the Sound Broadcasting Act 1972 gave the Independent Television Authority responsibility for organising the new Independent Local Radio (ILR) stations. The Independent Television Commission formally replaced the IBA on 1 January 1991 in regulatory terms; however, the authority itself was not officially dissolved until 2003. The IBA appointed and regulated a number of regional programme TV contractors and local radio contractors, and built and operated the network of transmitters distributing these programmes through its Engineering Division. Knightsbridge is a residential and retail district in central London, south of Hyde Park, London, Hyde Park. It is identified in the London Plan as one of two international retail centres in London, alongside the West End of London, West End. Capital XTRA (formerly Choice FM) is a Global-owned radio station that broadcasts on 96.9 FM and 107.1 FM in Greater London. Nationally, it is heard on DAB Digital Radio, Freesat, Sky, Virgin Media and Global Player. It specialises in hip hop, grime and R&B music, and is a commercial competitor to BBC Radio 1Xtra. Radio Thamesmead
106.8 Time FM was a local commercial radio station located in the south-east London and north-west Kent area of England, which broadcast to Greenwich and Bexleyheath in London and Dartford and Gravesend in Kent on 106.8 FM, and ceased transmission in April 2009. Background The radio station originally broadcast as Radio Thamesmead using the local Rediffusion cable television system (channel L). It was financed originally by the Home Office, due to a fear of flooding before the Thames Barrier was finished and featured weekly alarm 'rehearsals. The first studio was in the Ecumenical Centre and run by the Rev Patrick Forbes who presented a mainly classical music breakfast show. KFM was an unlicensed radio station based in Stockport, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. History KFM originally broadcast on 94.2 MHz FM from a studio on Middle Hillgate, Stockport with the transmitter and aerial at Goyt Mill in Marple from November 1983 to February 1985. Its name on the business board was Mersey Valley Electronics. Sunrise Radio is an Asian radio station in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. Availability The station broadcasts 24 hours a day on 103.2 FM across Bradford & surrounding areas and on DAB Calderdale, Kirklees and Bradford (which includes Bradford, Huddersfield, Keighley) and Manchester. London Greek Radio
London Greek Radio (LGR) is an Independent Local Radio station for London's Greek community, most of which forms part of the ethnically diverse Cypriot community. It broadcasts in both Greek and English on 103.3 FM in London and is also available on DAB in Birmingham and Manchester. LGR was first founded in October 1983 by Chris Harmanda and George Power (later to set up Kiss FM), and started life as a pirate radio station. On 13 November 1989, it commenced legal broadcasting as part of the Independent Broadcasting Authority '' incremental radio'' licenses. It initially shared its frequency with another former pirate station, WNK. They become the first stations to share a frequency and they alternated every four hours. Sunrise Radio is a 24-hour commercial radio station, focusing on entertainment, music and news from the Indian subcontinent. It broadcasts to the Greater London area on 963/972 AM, on DAB (SDL National), and via the internet. Sunset 102 was an Incremental radio station, a new type of station licensed by the Independent Broadcasting Authority in 1989. It was the first of a series of licenses awarded by the IBA in areas already served by an Independent Local Radio station. Each station had to offer output not already available on ILR, such as specialist music or unique programmes for a specific section of the community. History Sunset 102 went into liquidation in October 1993. In May of the same year, the Radio Authority made a decision to prematurely terminate Sunset's licence, apparently accusing the station of providing inaccurate information about its financial and management affairs. In August 1993, the station reportedly had its transmission facilities withdrawn by NTL for non-payment. Following a brief return to the air, the liquidator was called in and the station fell silent. Stockport
Stockport is a town and borough in Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester, south-west of Ashton-under-Lyne and north of Macclesfield. The River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey here. Kettering is a market and industrial town in North Northamptonshire, England. It is located north of London and north-east of Northampton, west of the River Ise, a tributary of the River Nene.
