Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Guglielmo Franchetti or Gino Franchetti (born 5 October 1985) is former motorcycle speedway rider from Italy. Career Franchetti was a member of Italy national speedway team, earning 5 international caps and was twice Italian National Champion in 2009 and 2012. Mattia Carpanese
Mattia Carpanese born (5 November 1985 in Padova, Italy) is a speedway rider who in 2007 rode in the UK for the Workington Comets who compete in the Premier League, and for the Birmingham Brummies in 2008. Carpanese finished runner-up in the Italian Championship in 2005. He was selected as a wild card for the 2006 and 2007 Italian Speedway Grand Prix. He quit the Comets after a string of injuries on 30 August 2007. On 20 April 2008 it was announced that Carpanese had been signed by Birmingham Brummies as a short term replacement for injured rider James Birkinshaw but was released after twenty eight days. Emiliano Diebo Sanchez also known as Poty Sanchez (born 9 December 1977 in Buenos Aires) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Aregtnina, with Italian ancestry. He is three times National Argentinian champion and twice National Italian champion. He has raced internationally for Italy. Club career Sanchez started his British racing career with Glasgow Tigers in 1999. He quickly impressed and spent a further two seasons with the Scottish club before moving to England where he rode for Cornish side, Trelawny Tigers. He was part of their side that won the Premier Trophy in 2002. After moving to Hull Vikings he was part of the side that won the league and cup double in his first season in 2004. Stefano Alfonso (born 10 January 1968 in Este, Italy) was a speedway rider who raced for the Scottish Monarchs and Edinburgh Monarchs in the UK. Career Summary After starting out as a MotoCross rider, Alfonso switched to speedway in 1992 at the age of 24. In 1995 Alfonso finished second in both the Continental Semi Final in Lonigo and the Continental Final in Miskolc before finishing 15th out of 16 in the Grand Prix Challenge in Lonigo. These performances were enough to get him noticed by British League clubs and he signed for the Scottish Monarchs for the 1996 season. Giuseppe Marzotto
Giuseppe Marzotto (born 30 January 1944, in Arzignano) is a former Italian international motorcycle speedway rider. Career Marzotto began competing in scooter gymkhanas at the age of 16, riding under the pseudonym "Charlie Brown" because his parents were opposed to him entering in such events. He won the Trofeo Nazionale Gincane four times from 1966–1969. When he was 19 he took up motocross and rode until 1974 before deciding to focus on speedway. His first speedway meeting was at Lonigo in 1968. In 1974 he finished runnerup in the Italian Speedway Championship and the following year won the title. In 1976 he joined the Wolverhampton Wolves and rode in 11 meetings in the British League. In 1977 he rode in Germany for the MSC Olching Club. He later rode for the Moto Club La Favorita.
