Islam in Iceland is a minority religion. The Pew Research Center estimated that the number of Muslims in Iceland was below its 10,000 minimum threshold, and official statistics put the figure at under 1,300, or 0.33% out of the total population of 385,230.In 2011, Icelandic Muslims attracted the interest of Al Jazeera; the channel planned a documentary dealing with Muslims in Iceland and New Zealand. Al Jazeera was interested in how Ramadan is honored in the higher latitudes where the night can be of unusual length when compared to the majority-Muslim lands. Jan Janszoon
Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, commonly known as Reis Mourad the Younger (c. 1570 – c. 1641), was an Ottoman and Salé Rovers Dutch pirate in Algeria and Morocco who converted to Islam after being captured by a Moorish state in 1618. He began serving as a pirate, one of the most famous of the 17th-century "Salé Rovers". Together with other corsairs, he helped establish the independent Republic of Salé at the city of that name, serving as the first President and Commander. He also served as Governor of Oualidia. Early life Jan Janszoon van Haerlem was born in Haarlem in 1570, which is in Holland, then a province ruled by the Habsburg monarchy. Imam
Imam (; ar, إمام '; plural: ') is an Islamic leadership position. For Sunni Muslims, Imam is most commonly used as the title of a worship leader of a mosque. In this context, imams may lead Islamic worship services, lead prayers, serve as community leaders, and provide religious guidance. Thus for Sunnis, anyone can study the basic Islamic sciences and become an Imam. For most Shia Muslims, the Imams are absolute infallible leaders of the Islamic community after the Prophet. Sunni Islam () is the largest branch of Islam, followed by 85–90% of the world's Muslims. Its name comes from the word '' Sunnah'', referring to the tradition of Muhammad. Reykjavík Mosque
The Reykjavík Mosque ( is, Moskan í Reykjavík) is a mosque and gathering area for Muslims in Iceland. It is located in the Ármúli district. The mosque was opened in 2002 by the Muslim Association of Iceland after requesting the city government for permission to build a purpose-built mosque in 2000, with no swift response. Services It offers Friday prayers every week and it is also open for all other prayers during the day from Fajr to Isha. In January 2009, a new wooden altar was built by members of the association. Ibrahim Sverrir Agnarsson
Ibrahim Sverrir Agnarsson (born 1948) was the chair of the Muslim Association of Iceland from 2010–2015. Biography Ibrahim Sverrir was born in 1948. In 1973 he married María Harðardóttir; they have two sons.Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir, 'To a Mosque on a Magic Carpet', ''Iceland Review'', 52.1 (2014), 64–68. Ibrahim Sverrir encountered Islam while living as a hippy and working as a horse-trainer for Spaghetti Westerns in Almería in Spain in 1970. Living in an Arab castle, he became interested in the inscriptions on the walls. He travelled to Istanbul, on to Peshawar, bought a horse there and spent some months riding in the mountains of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. During this period he converted to Islam. Salmann Tamimi
Salmann (Suleiman) Tamimi (1 March 1955 – 2 December 2020) was a founding member of the Association Iceland-Palestine (Icelandic: Félagið Ísland-Palestína) and the Association of Muslims in Iceland (Icelandic: Félag múslima á Íslandi). Biography Salmann was born in 1955 in the occupied West Bank and grew up in Wadi El Joz in east Jerusalem. His father was Salim (Saleem) Abu Khaled al Tamimi, a businessman and passionate activist, and his mother Salim's second wife Nazima abu Rajabb al Tamimi; his elder siblings are, in order of age, Younes, Rawda, Safah, Amneh, along with his younger sister Amal. Younes moved to Iceland in 1966, Amneh some years later (but moved back to Jerusalem), and Salmann in 1971, at the age of sixteen.
