Iris Winnifred King ''née'' Ewart (1910–2000), was born in Kingston, Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, on September 5, 1910. She attended the Kingston Technical High School in Kingston and later the Roosevelt University in Chicago where she studied political science and public administration from 1951-'53. In 1958–1959 she served as a mayor of Kingston and was the first woman in that function. Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the island. It faces a natural harbour protected by the Palisadoes, a long sand spit which connects the town of Port Royal and the Norman Manley International Airport to the rest of the island. Roosevelt University is a private university with campuses in Chicago and Schaumburg, Illinois. Founded in 1945, the university was named in honor of United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
