Iris Varela
María Iris Varela Rangel ( San Cristóbal, Táchira, Venezuela, March 9, 1969) is a Venezuelan leftist politician, activist, criminologist, corrupt, member of the board of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and Minister of Popular Power for the Prison Service. Political life Varela was a founding member of the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement (Movimiento Bolivariano Revolucionario200). She served in the state of Táchira as a coordinator for Fifth Republic Movement, the party founded in 1997 to support the candidacy of former president Hugo Chávez. On April 21, 2013, Varela was reaffirmed as Minister of Correctional Services for the Bolivaran Government of Venezuela for the government of Nicolás Maduro. 2017 Venezuelan Constituent Assembly Election
Constituent Assembly elections were held in Venezuela on 30 July 2017 to elect the members of the 2017 Constituent National Assembly ( es, Asamblea Nacional Constituyente; ANC). Unlike the 1999 Constituent National Assembly, which was assembled following a referendum, the 2017 election was convened by the presidential decree of President Nicolás Maduro. Approximately two-thirds (364) of Assembly members were elected by municipal citizens while members of seven social sectors including trade unions, communal councils, indigenous groups, farmers, students, and pensioners elected the remaining one-third (181) of members. During the crisis in Venezuela, governments of the United States, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Panama and Switzerland applied individual sanctions against people associated with the administration of Nicolás Maduro.
