Airline Captain Irene Koki Mutungi, commonly known as Koki Mutungi, is a professional pilot in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. She was the first female on the African continent to become certified as a Captain of the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" aircraft. She flies for Kenya Airways, the national airline of Kenya. Early life and education She was born in 1976 to Kenyan parents. Her father was a commercial pilot with Kenya Airways. She has since retired and is an aviation consultant. Koki attended Moi Girls School Nairobi. After graduating high school in 1992, at the age of 17 years, she enrolled in flight school at Nairobi's Wilson Airport, where she obtained her Private Pilot's License. She continued her pilot education in Oklahoma City in the United States where she was awarded the Commercial Pilot's License, by the Federal Aviation Administration. Kamba People
The Kamba or Akamba (sometimes called Wakamba) people are a Bantu ethnic group who predominantly live in the area of Kenya stretching from Nairobi to Tsavo and north to Embu, in the southern part of the former Eastern Province. Airline Captain Aluel James Bol, is a professional pilot in the United States of America, who flies for Delta Air Lines. She is credited to be the first woman from South Sudan to qualify as an airline pilot. Early life and education She was born circa 1983 to South Sudanese parents. Her father was the late Justice James Bol. She grew up in Kenya, as a refugee, during South Sudan's political and ethnic conflict. Following the death of her father, she was sponsored by the new South Sudanese government to complete training as an airline pilot, in aviation schools in the United States, graduating in 2011. Esther Mbabazi is a professional commercial airline pilot in Rwanda. She is the first female in Rwanda to become certified as a commercial airline pilot. She flies for RwandAir, the national airline of Rwanda. Background and education She was born in Burundi circa 1988, to Rwandese parents. Her father and mother are revivalist pastors and the family moved around a lot. When Esther was about eight years, her father died in a plane crash when the aircraft he was travelling in overshot the runway while landing in neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. Vanita Kayiwa, is a Ugandan airline transport pilot, who serves as a first officer at Uganda National Airlines Company, Uganda's national carrier airline, on the A330-841 aircraft, since February 2021.
