The 2008 Iowa House of Representatives election were held on November 4, 2008. The Iowa House, like the United States House of Representatives, is up for re-election in its entirety every two years. Prior to the election, the Democrats were in the majority - this marked the first time in 42 years that the Democrats had controlled both branches of the Iowa General Assembly and the Governor's Office. Iowa House Of Representatives
The Iowa House of Representatives is the lower house of the Iowa General Assembly, the upper house being the Iowa Senate. There are 100 seats in the Iowa House of Representatives, representing 100 single-member districts across the state, formed by dividing the 50 Senate districts in half. Each district has a population of approximately 30,464 . The House of Representatives meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Unlike the upper house, the Iowa Senate, state House representatives serve two-year terms with the whole chamber up for re-election in even-numbered years. There are no term limits for the House. Linda Upmeyer
Linda L. Upmeyer (born July 23, 1952) is an American politician who served in the Iowa House of Representatives from the 54th district from 2003 to 2021 and as the Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives from 2016 to 2020. She was the first female Speaker in Iowa's history. She received her BSN from the University of Iowa and her MSN from Drake University. On August 19, 2015, Upmeyer was elected by the members of the Iowa House of Representatives Republican majority to serve as the Speaker of the House. Deborah L. Berry (born September 2, 1958) is an American politician who was the Iowa State Representative from the 62nd District from 2012 to 2017. Kerry Burt is a Iowa Democratic Party, Democratic politician, representing the 21st District in the Iowa House of Representatives. He won the election in November 2008 and was sworn in on January 12, 2009. He did not seek re-election in 2010 and was succeeded by Anesa Kajtazovic.
