Inverness was a federal electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1935. It was created in the ''British North America Act'', 1867. It was abolished in 1933 when it was merged into Inverness—Richmond riding. It consisted of Inverness County. Inverness County, Nova Scotia
Inverness County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Inverness, the town of Port Hawkesbury and the Whycocomagh 2 Waycobah First Nation reserve. History Established as the County of Juste au Corps in 1835, Inverness County was given its present name in 1837. It was named after Sir Cameron Inverness of Scotland, the land from which many of the early settlers came. Agriculture and fishing dominated the economy with exports of butter and cattle to Newfoundland and Halifax for most of the nineteenth century. The construction of the Inverness and Richmond Railway in 1901, and the subsequent opening of coal mines at Port Hood, Mabou, and Inverness, created the "only home market" local farmers had ever had. Inverness—Richmond was a federal electoral district in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1968. This riding was created in 1933 from parts of Inverness and Richmond—West Cape Breton ridings. It consisted of the counties of Inverness and Richmond and part of the county of Cape Breton (the municipal districts of Bateston (No. 24), Catalone (No. 15), Gabarus (No. 7), Grand Mira (No. 17), Louisburg Parish (No. 6), Main-à-Dieu (No. 5), and Trout Brook (No. 16)), including the town of Louisburg. A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district. Hugh Cameron (politician)
Hugh Cameron (March 18, 1836 – May 11, 1918) was a Canadian politician and a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Iverness in Nova Scotia. He was born in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, the son of Alexander Cameron and Liz Cameron. Cameron studied at Saint Francis Xavier College and, in 1861, graduated in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania and also from the School of Practical Obstetrics in Philadelphia. He practiced medicine at Mabou in Cape Breton. He studied further at Bellevue Hospital medical school in New York City from 1864 to 1865 before returning to his practice. Cameron also served as surgeon for the militia. He was elected as a member of the Anti-Confederation Party to the 1st Canadian Parliament on September 20, 1867. He became a member of the Liberal-Conservative Party on January 30, 1869. Angus MacLennan
Angus MacLennan (May 3, 1844 – August 27, 1908) was a Canadian politician. Born in Dunvegan, Inverness County, on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, MacLennan was the Liberal Member of Parliament for the House of Commons of Canada riding of Inverness from 1896 to 1908. Angus MacLennan was the youngest of the ten children of John MacLennan, an early settler from Kintail Scotland. MacLennan taught at local district schools to earn money for his medical studies. He eventually graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1871, and practiced medicine for over 30 years in Inverness County, maintaining the practice throughout his political career. His extended family over the years now resides in Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island and Mainland Nova Scotia. Isaac Duncan MacDougall
Isaac Duncan MacDougall (10 July 1897 – 4 April 1969) was a National Government, Conservative and Progressive party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Strathlorne, Nova Scotia and became an auditor, barrister, journalist and student. MacDougall studied at St. Francis Xavier University, earning Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. He was first elected to Parliament at the Inverness riding in the 1925 general election after an unsuccessful campaign there as a Progressive Party candidate in the 1921 election. He was re-elected in 1926 and 1930. In the 1935 federal election, riding boundary changes meant that MacDougall's would seek re-election in the new Inverness—Richmond riding. He was defeated by Donald MacLennan of the Liberal party.
